Tri-Institutional Mentorship Initiative (TIMI)

The Tri-I Mentorship Initiative (TIMI) is a virtual mentorship program led by the Tri-Institutional Outreach Committee, a group of students from Weill Cornell Medicine, Sloan Kettering, and Rockefeller University. Prospective graduate students will be paired with an individual graduate student mentor to help them navigate the graduate school application process.

The committee is actively seeking mentees. Eligible students are prospective PhD program applicants interested in applying to graduate school this year and either currently hold or will receive a Bachelor’s degree by Spring 2025. PhD programs of interest should be in a biomedical-related field.

Apply for the TIMI Mentorship before is August 7, 2024.

The program kickoff meeting is on August 21. Mentees will meet with their mentors at least three times between September and November. All programming is held virtually.

UK Master’s in Forensic Toxicology & Analytical Genetics

The University of Kentucky is accepting applications for its Master’s in Forensics Toxicology & Analytical Genetics. The program has two areas of concentration: Forensic Toxicology/Chemistry and Forensic/Analytical Genetics.

Through the common core curriculum, students in both concentrations will graduate with a skill set in advanced forensic toxicology, advanced analytical genetics, writing, communication, professionalism, ethics, legal perspectives and workplace-specific skills. The curriculum contains two internships which provide students with hands-on experiences necessary to be competitive in the job market upon exiting the program. This is a two-year program.

Tuition for this program is assessed at a special rate for all students (in- and out-of-state), which represents significant savings for out-of-state students. Graduates will be competitive for workforce deployment in the areas of: drug testing and analysis, DNA/genetic testing and analysis, forensic governmental divisions, hospital clinical labs, cancer genetics, genealogy, research and developmental laboratories, and crime laboratories.

The fall 2024 application deadline is July 26, 2024. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no GRE requirement.

DOE/NNSA Undergraduate Recruitment Workshop

Application Deadline: February 15, 2024

The Transuranic Chemistry Center of Research Excellence will host a DOE/NNSA Undergraduate Recruitment Workshop, intended for sophomore and junior undergraduates at any institution who are interested in careers in the national laboratories and potentially graduate research in one of the groups within the Center.

The Workshop will be held at Georgia Tech from April 11-13 (Thurs-Sat), 2024, and will consist of a day of networking and lectures, including talks from PIs and National Laboratory researchers, and a following day of lab tours, graduate school Q&A’s, and a chance to explore Atlanta.

Selected participants will learn about:

  • Chemistry PhD programs at Georgia Tech, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Iowa, Washington State University, and the University of Akron;
  • the NNSA TRU-CoRE Program; and
  • careers in the US National Laboratories (PNNL, LLNL, LANL, and SRNL).

All travel costs and hotel accommodations will be covered along with meals during the program for those students accepted into the workshop. Details on invited speakers will be posted to the website soon.

UVA Chemistry Graduate Programs

University of Virginia Chemistry offers three graduate options. Each program provides different levels and types of support to help students achieve their goals:

  1. The Ph.D. program is designed for students who want and are prepared to obtaining this research-focused degree.
  2. The UVA Bridge to Doctorate Program is intended for students who desire a Ph.D. degree, have the talent and motivation to complete an advanced degree, but whose preparation in their intended field of study might be insufficient to begin a Ph.D. program.
  3. The non-thesis Master’s program is designed for students who want an advanced degree but are not necessarily ready for or interested in the Ph.D. program.

The graduate programs provide unique support and opportunities including:

  1. First year peer mentoring program: each graduate student is paired up with a senior graduate student who helps them navigate the first year of graduate school.
  2. Professional development opportunities, many through UVA’s PhD Plus program, in the form of courses, workshops and internships.
  3. Direct connections with potential employers via seminar series and career fairs hosted in the Department of Chemistry.

UVA Chemistry has a wide range of research interests that span astrochemistry, bioanalytical, biophysical, catalysis and energy, chemical biology, chemical education, imaging and sensing, organic, nanoscience, surface chemistry and spectroscopy, and theoretical chemistry.

The application deadline is December 1st. There is an application fee waiver program.

Additional details are available on the website, brochure, and MS degree flyer.

The Paper Trail UG Research Symposium

The Paper Trail is an online, open-community journal club. Their mission is to create an informal space for scientists to discuss recent, groundbreaking studies with people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Paper Trail Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held virtually on November 1, 2023. It is an opportunity for undergraduate trainees to share their work, with a particular focus on trainees from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM.

This symposium is for undergraduates who are planning to apply for graduate school* to share their research with an audience that includes professors looking to hire new graduate students.

*with the intention of starting grad school in Fall 2024

The event will include undergraduate research presentations, as well as timeslots for short lab overview presentations from faculty members interested in recruiting new graduate students. An event schedule is available on the symposium webpage.

Another goal of the symposium is to serve as an alternative to large society meetings that happen this time of year (e.g., BMES and AIChE) but are often difficult to attend because of any number of financial, personal, familial, or professional hurdles. There is potential for vouchers for graduate school application fees. Presenters will also be offered gift cards for lunch.

The deadline for abstract submissions is Thursday, October 12 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time.
