Undergraduate Research Scholarship & International Research Grant

Students who have a major in the College of Arts and Sciences are eligible to apply for the Undergraduate Research Scholarship (URS) and the International Research Grant.

Scholarship amounts range from $500-$12,000 and the funds are put directly towards tuition and fees for the recipients.

The deadline for application is February 8, 2016 and selections are made by mid-April.

While applicants do not have to be members of the Arts and Sciences Honors Program, preference is given to students who are eligible to graduate with research distinction or with honors research distinction.

Full-time Chemist Opportunity at Oakwood Labs

Oakwood Labs is currently seeking OSU students for a full-time chemistry opportunity.

This position will include responsibilities for analytical development of pharmaceutical products for Oakland and its partners. Hands-on laboratory work will be used to aid in the development of inject able pharmaceutical products.

Basic training will be obtained through guidance of experienced professionals.

Some of the obligations are listed here:

1. Conducts analytical testing to support the development and validation of analytical methods for drug products, intermediates and excipients.

2. Maintains complete records of testing data and results.

3. Assists with the operations of the Research and Development Lab.

4. Maintains professional and technical knowledge.

5. Contributes to the effective operation of the department and the overall success of the Company.
Applicants should have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or a closely related science field with chemistry and mathematics as completed coursework.

2015 Geography Bowl

The Geography Bowl Competition, part of Geography Awareness Week 2015, will test students’ knowledge of geography trivia and give students the chance to win scholarship money. Teams of 3-5 are allowed to compete, as long as no more than 3 students in a team are geography, GIS, or atmospheric sciences majors.

Through multiple rounds of competition, four teams will advance to the championship rounds and compete for $1,750 in scholarship prizes.

This event will take place on Thursday, November 19  from 5-8:30 p.m. and Friday, November 20 from 5-6:30 p.m in Derby Hall 1080.

Food will also be provided.

The registration deadline is Friday, November 13.

SURI: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is looking for students to participate in summer research pertaining to one of five areas: biological sciences, quantitative science/basic bio-medicine, kidney-related, chemistry, and cancer-related.

Participants will pursue their own research projects under the eye of a member of the graduate school faculty. Various lectures, seminars, and/or journals will also supplement the research experience.

A stipend of $4,000 will be available to participants. Applicants must be enrolled in a science degree program and have completed their sophomore year.

OSU Graduate and Professional School Fair

The sixth annual OSU Graduate and Professional School Fair will be held on Thursday, November 5 from 4:30 – 6:00 PM in the Ohio Union Great Hall Meeting Rooms 1 & 2.

Admission representatives from more than twenty OSU programs, pre-law and pre-health advisors, and arts and sciences career counselors will be available to answer questions.  This is a great opportunity for students who are new to OSU to begin to think about coursework, extracurricular activities, and co-curricular opportunities that will help them to prepare for graduate or professional school admissions.  It is also a good opportunity for students who are approaching graduation to learn what they need to do in order to apply to an OSU program.

This Fair is an option for Student Success Series credit.

Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

SURI: Goddard Center for Astrobiology (NASA)

The Goddard Center for Astrobiology, which is one of the 12 teams comprising NASA’s Astrobiology Institute, is looking for students to participate in undergraduate research. The research takes place at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

During the summer, the research associates will participate in specific research projects. Weekly, they will participate in tutorial lectures by leading Goddard Center scientists or in visits to participating laboratories. This will allow associates to experience the breadth and depth of the field. At the end of the ten-week period, associates will present their research findings at a forum which will be projected over  the internet to the NASA Astrobiology Institute.

Some available research ares include:

  • Chemical composition of comets and meteorites
  • Processes that affect the origin and evolution of organics and water in the planetary systems
  • Chemistry of the material in natal interstellar cloud cores and proto-planetary disks
  • Analysis of small bodies and planets using advanced instruments
