Science & Engineering Leadership Initiative (SELI)

The University of Delaware’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is receiving applications for their Research for Undergraduates (REU) program: the Science and Engineering Leadership Initiative (SELI). The program runs from June 8, 2020 to August 14, 2020 at the University of Delaware, and applications will be accepted until February 1, 2020.

The SELI is motivated by the realization that people with disabilities are significantly underrepresented in STEM disciplines and aims to provide these students with research and community building experiences tailored to fostering success in graduate school and beyond. The REU program is open to all undergraduate students with disabilities (mobility, sensory, learning, psychological, medical, or other) who are majors in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related fields. Some highlights of the program include:

  • Participate in state-of-the-art research
  • Meet like-minded peers
  • Scientific field trips
  • Unique mentoring for graduate school/STEM careers
  • Networking opportunities
  • Stipend and housing provided for the 9-week program
  • Present your work at the University of Delaware 2o2o Undergraduate Research and Service Learning Symposium
  • Opportunity to present research results at the Spring 2020 American Chemical Society National Meeting

For more information about the program, you can visit the program website here. Applications are due February 1, 2020 and can be found here.

Course Spotlight: CHEM 5240 – Intro to Protein Modeling

Offered in Spring 2020.
MWF 1:50 – 2:45pm
Dr. Richard Spinney

Students will have an opportunity to explore the theories and methods of molecular modeling and computational chemistry in CHEM 5240: Introduction to Protein Modeling.

The course allows students to get hands-on experience with computational chemistry software, using molecular mechanics, and modeling dynamic systems (molecular dynamics) as applied to large biological molecules such as proteins. The course focuses on the application of modern modeling techniques, rather than the mathematical formulation, used to solve current problems in biochemistry and pharmacology. The course runs like a workshop with extensive computer time using modern protein modeling software.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of CHEM 2520 (Organic Chemistry II)

University of Nebraska PhD Program Highlight

The University of Nebraska’s Ph.D. Program in Complex Biosystems is now accepting applications! This program is directed toward students interested in developing and applying quantitative and computational approaches to data acquisition and analysis in multiple life science fields, i.e. human health and medical biochemistry, plant genomics and phenomics, microbial ecosystems, and systems ecology.

They are looking for students from many undergraduate majors and focuses such as:

  • Biological and agricultural sciences
  • Biochemistry
  • Nutrition and food science
  • Agricultural and biological systems engineering
  • Mathematics, statistics, data sciences, and computer science

As a first-year student in the program, The University of Nebraska offers full support to students by providing them opportunities to participate in a full year of research rotations to gain a semester of laboratory teaching experience.

To learn more about the Complex Biosystems program, you can visit their website. Follow this link to apply.

The application deadline for Fall 2020 is December 15, 2019.

University of Delaware Graduate Program

Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Students interested in PhD studies, The University of Delaware offers diverse research opportunities as a leader in molecular sciences and are currently accepting applications for the Fall of 2020.

The UD Chemistry and Biochemistry Department holds thirty different research groups where students, faculty, research staff and post-doctoral scholars work closely together.

They hold two NIH Centers for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) and an NIH Chemical and Biology Interface (CIB) training program. With $10 million annually they support 200 full-time PhD students.  Preparing students as they develop into independent scholars and prepare for the next stages of their careers.

For more information visit the program’s website or peruse the brochure.

Chem & Biochem Club Event

On Thursday, November 21, the Chemistry & Biochemistry Club will be meeting for a presentation by Marathon and a holiday party. The meeting will be in CBEC 330 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

Marathon is seeking to hire interns for Summer 2020.

After the presentation, attendees will celebrate the holidays by making “chemistree” ornaments.

Questions about the meeting or the club can be emailed to bashian.5@osu.edu.

Course Spotlight: CHEM 5520 – Nanochemistry

Offered in Spring 2020.
Tuesdays/Thursdays, 9:35am – 10:55am
Dr. Josh Goldberger

Nanoscale materials are materials with nm size dimensions, with properties that exist in the border between molecules and solids. Due to the unique properties that emerge in this regime, these materials have already impacted numerous industries including electronics, energy generation and storage, and medicine. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to nanoscale materials, their synthesis, their unique properties, and applications.

Prerequisites: Students should have completed General Chemistry II (Chem 1220, 1620, 1920H) and will need instructor permission.
