College of Medicine’s Summer Undergraduate Course Creating Excellence in Scientific Study (SUCCESS)

If medical research or medical school are a part of your future plans, consider applying to the Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Summer Undergraduate Course Creating Excellence in Scientific Study (SUCCESS) Program.  The SUCCESS Program will enable students to participate in a 10-week, stipend provided with a travel allowance, enriching research experience hosted by the Medical Scientist Training Program. While taking part in this program, students will take valuable professional development courses and learn from engaged mentors; all while working in state-of-the-art research facilities.  Eligible students have an expected college graduation date in 2017 or 2018, are enrolled in a U.S. 4-year undergraduate institution, and are American citizens or permanent residents.

SURI: Center for Chemical Evolution

The Center for Chemical Evolution (CCE) is looking for students interested in a 10-week, paid summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Students who apply should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have an interest in chemical sciences and research.

Through this opportunity, students will be paired with research professors in different chemical disciplines. Ares of research include the study of chemical evolution and the chemistry associated with the origins of life.

A stipend of at least $4,500 will be given to participants, as well as a travel allowance and on-campus housing.

The CCE is a National Science Foundation Center for Chemical Innovation. These programs are focused on collaboration to answer long term, fundamental challenges in chemistry. The CCE in specific is looking for how life may have emerged from chemistry.

Scholarship: Students of Polish Decent

The Kościuszko Foundation is offering a scholarship worth $5,000 to undergraduate students of Polish decent.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be an undergraduate of Polish decent who is a US citizen/permanent resident
  • Have outstanding promise in the natural sciences
  • Have at least a 3.5 GPA

SURI: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is offering summer fellowships with Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) and Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS).

Candidates will join in on projects that deal with new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases.

This fellowship, falling between May 25-August 5, provides a $2,700/month stipend for full-time undergraduates and $3,400/month for full-time graduate students.

Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students in applied sciences. Biology and chemistry majors are preferred.

SURI: West Virginia University Centers for Neuroscience

West Virginia University will be offering upwards of 15 internships this coming summer. They will be research intensive training and eligible to undergraduates who have completed their second or third year.

The internships are nine weeks long, with training in one of the following areas:

  1. Sensory, cognitive, and behavioral neuroscience
  2. Neural injury, including stroke
  3. Neurodegeneration
  4. Neuropsychiatric diseases

Participants will receive $4,000 and on-campus housing. To be considered, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or better, be enrolled in a U.S. college or university, have a background in biology, neuroscience, physics, chemistry, engineering, or psychology, and complete the online application, resume, two letters of recommendation, and send in their official transcript.

SURI: Virginia Tech’s Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute (MII)

This summer, Virginia Tech is offering a summer undergraduate research program in “Engineering Polymers for Performance in Emerging FEWS Technology”.

Undergraduates (juniors and seniors preferred) in a science or engineering field can apply and those selected will participate in research as well as earn $7,000 during the 11 week program. This covers living expenses and includes a stipend.

The program will take place from May 24- August 6.
