Experiential Learning Abroad: Sustainability (ELSIP)

Experiential Learning in Sustainability: An International Perspective (ELSIP), a global experiential learning initiative created under Students in Life Sciences Abroad (STILSA) in partnership with ASC Career Success and the Office of International Affairs Brazil Gateway offers paid career building and credit-earning experiential learning opportunities in labs in Norway, France, and Brazil. STILSA is open to OSU undergraduates majoring in life sciences as well as to recent graduates and master’s students.

Host companies:

  • Kelpinor (Norway): A climate action company specializing in the cultivation of seaweed to produce biostimulants aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing plant health. Kelpinor internship details.
  • Visagio (Brazil): A global management and technology consulting firm specializing in business transformation through a comprehensive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) approach. Visagio internship details.
  • Agrivalle (Brazil): A leader in regenerative agricultural systems and agricultural biologicals which offers innovative and sustainable solutions to farmers. Agrivalle internship details.

All internships last for 90 days (3 months) maximum and can start as early as May 2025 and as late as October 2025. Selected participants will receive $5,000 as a stipend to off-set the cost of their experience abroad. They must enroll at OSU during the time of their internship abroad to earn credit for the experience abroad and must also register their travel in the OIA travel registry and purchase mandatory insurance coverage. The dates of the internship will be finalized in consultation with the host laboratory.

University of Southern California REU

University of Southern California Department of Chemistry is accepting applications for its summer 2025 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), titled “Snapshots of Chemistry”. This title was chosen to emphasize the program’s focus on gaining insights on key chemical features of molecular processes via visual images.

The program features a broad selection of research groups in biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, synthetic & medicinal chemistry, biophysics, energy & sustainability, and quantum science.

Program support includes $6,000 stipend, housing, student health insurance, and travel.

This REU is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.

Several in-lab or in-field research-focused opportunities in the field of systems biology, neuroscience, marine biology, plant biology, RNA biology, terrestrial ecology, biomaterial science and animal ecophysiology are available as full-time independent and individual experiences and will take place at:

Paid Summer Research Opportunity at Ohio University

The Diabetes Institute and Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University will host the Diabetes Institute Summer Interprofessional Research Experience (DISIRE) Program sponsored by The National Institutes of Health from June 1–July 26, 2025.

The DISIRE program provides a hands-on research experience in the structure of an 8-week paid internship focused on one of a number of various aspects of diabetes research. During the program, participants will learn various aspects of diabetes and perform research with a faculty mentor on a topic of mutual interest.  Also, the students will participate in activities crucial to preparation for graduate and/or medical school, including a professional development series. At the end of the summer program, participants present their research at a research symposium to faculty, staff, and summer scholars.

Faculty mentors in the DISIRE program study a wide range of affiliated fields including physiology, molecular biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, and understanding psychosocial and cognitive factors.

Sophomores and Juniors are especially encouraged to apply, but strong applications from Freshmen will be considered.

Research and Mentoring for Postbaccalaureates Opportunity

The Salamander Population and Adaptation Research Collaboration Network (SPARCnet) RaMP program is recruiting a diverse cohort of recent college graduates for a paid, year-long research and professional development mentorship program.

Mentees will work in a mentor-mentee team to carry out individual and collaborative research projects investigating patterns and predicting responses of amphibians to global change. Teams will be based at locations across the eastern and midwestern states, within the range of the focal salamander species, the eastern red-backed salamander. The SPARCnet RaMP program will provide professional development and career exploration for mentees to gain placement in career or graduate school opportunities, with the goal of expanding participation in the scientific workforce.

Eligibility information:

  • Mentee participants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States
  • Mentee participants must have received their undergraduate degree by the program’s start date of July 1st, 2025, and within the last four years
  • Mentee participants must not be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program
  • SPARCnet is targeting mentee participants who are:
    • Interested in research but may not have had strong research experiences as an undergraduate
    • Interested in continuing a career in STEM
    • Members of underrepresented groups in STEM fields

Program Benefits:

  • Paid one-year, full-time fellowship (minimum salary of $32,500 + benefits)
  • A $5,000 budget to complete an individual research project
  • A $5,000 budget to travel to workshops, professional development, regional conferences, and national conferences

CREATES-Undergrad is a paid fellowship program for Ohio State University undergraduate students interested in cancer research. Prior research experience is not required.

Selected participants will conduct work within The Ohio State University James Comprehensive Cancer Center and the College of Pharmacy.

RISE (REU) at Rutgers

RISE at Rutgers is a nationally acclaimed summer research program for outstanding undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. Scholars participate in cutting-edge research in the biological, physical, and social/behavioral sciences, math, engineering, and exciting interdisciplinary areas under the guidance of carefully matched faculty mentors. A robust professional development component, including optional GRE preparation, complements the research.

Participants also benefit from wellness workshops, social and recreational activities, and community engagement opportunities.

RISE is a 10 week in-person residential program. The dates for 2025 are May 27 – August 5. Students receive a stipend and housing.
