Michigan Chemistry Opportunities for Research and Education (M-CORE)

2021 Dates: October 28-29, 2021

The Michigan Chemistry Opportunities for Research and Education (M-CORE) program invites ~20 highly qualified prospective students to the University of Michigan Chemistry Department for a virtual visit to explore the Chemistry graduate program. You will not only get to interact with faculty, staff, and current graduate students informally, you also have an opportunity to explore virtually the chemistry building, labs, and Ann Arbor area.

M-CORE participants will:

  • Meet research faculty and current graduate students
  • Hear research presentations by Chemistry students
  • Learn about UM cutting-edge research facilities and the University campus
  • Get patent advice on how to assemble a competitive graduate school application

For more details, please visit the program’s webpage at M|CORE Program | UM LSA Chemistry. Questions can be emailed to mcore.chem@umich.edu. There will be a virtual info session in September, where you can learn more about the program directly from faculty and previous M-CORE participants.

M-CORE is specifically seeking juniors and seniors from from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the chemical sciences.

Applications are currently being accepted. Apply by Monday, October 4, 2021.

Biochemical Markers Fellowship at CDC (Recent Graduates)

About DLS: The Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  is seeking applicants for a Biochemical Markers Fellowship opportunity. DLS uses advanced laboratory science and innovative techniques to improve the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic and selected infectious diseases. DLS also works to improve the rapid and accurate detection of chemical threat agents, radiologic threat agents, and selected toxins.

Projects: Participants will join laboratory teams to develop and apply analytical methods to characterize and quantify biochemical markers, including those in biologic specimens (such as serum or urine), that are relevant to disease and harmful exposures. DLS currently has more than 170 active methods and 230+ mass spectrometers in use.

Selected candidates will be placed in one of seven branches within DLS (see website for branch information.) They will gain hands-on experience using state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation and automation equipment. DLS offers a stimulating research environment that enables ORISE fellows to gain practical experience in applied analytical chemistry and enhance their knowledge of public health.

Qualifications: Applicants should be Bachelor’s or Master’s graduates with degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or Microbiology. Must be a U.S. citizen.

The program will run Sept 15, 2021 – Sept 12, 2022. The stipend for Bachelor’s fellows will be approx. $3,800 montly.

Applications due July 19, 2021 at 3:00 PM EST.

DOE Fuel Cell Technologies Fellow

The Fuel Cell Technologies Fellow opportunity with the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office is now accepting applications. This is an opportunity for individuals who have a degree in the physical sciences, so may be of interest to recent CBC graduates.

What will I be doing? As a member of the team, you will both learn and contribute across the range of activities associated with managing applied research within the Fuel Cell Technologies Program. The Fuel Cells Technology Program activities will include monitoring project progress and milestones; reviewing and analyzing project progress reports and other technical reports; and engaging with project researchers. Key areas of research and development within the Fuel Cell Technologies Program include catalysts, membranes, membrane electrode assemblies, stacks, and balance of plant components.

Why should I apply?
