CBC Inaugural Industry Day Recruitment Session

CBC Inaugural Industry Day - May 7-8, 2018 in CBEC

Chemistry and Biochemistry will be hosting our first Industry Day on May 7th and 8th, 2018. The full schedule of events is available on the department website.  The most exciting part for our undergraduates students is the Recruitment Session on May 8th, when you will have the opportunity to meet with our Industry partners and learn about internship and job opportunities available at their companies. The session will be held in CBEC from 2-3pm.  Let ASC Career Services help you polish up your resume, then RSVP to save your spot at the Recruitment Session by April 20th.  The list of our Industry Partners who will be attending the event will be sent to in advance of the event to those who RSVP.  All of our Industry Partners will bring both scientists AND recruiters from their HR department, so they will be able to answer any questions you have.

If you are unable to make it but still wish to have your resume shared with the companies, please email your resume to Caitlin Golec at golec.4@osu.edu.

D. E. Shaw Research

The D. E. Shaw Research, a computational biochemistry group based in Manhattan, will be hosting a talk at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, in room 304 of the Journalism Building.  During the talk, they will present an overview of their work and answer any questions students may have about the lab. It is an interdisciplinary group and so students of all degree levels and postdocs from a variety of fields are invited to attend.

Food will be served!

D. E. Shaw Research is an independent research laboratory that conducts scientific research and technological development in the field of computational biochemistry.  They have designed and developed multiple generations of Anton, a massively parallel supercomputer that executes MD simulations orders of magnitude faster than was previously possible.  Anton has now simulated the behavior of a number of proteins for periods as long as several milliseconds, revealing biologically and pharmaceutically relevant aspects of protein dynamics.

Members of the group include computational chemists and biologists, computer scientists and applied mathematicians, and computer architects and engineers of all seniority levels, working collaboratively within a tightly coupled interdisciplinary research environment under the leadership of chief scientist Dr. David E. Shaw.

Join us for an overview of our work and a discussion of current openings in the lab.

There will be two speakers: Qi Wang and Stone Jiang

Course Spotlight: Biochem 5613

*New* Biochem 5613 will be offered in Autumn 2018!

What: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology I

Description: An introductory course in biochemistry and molecular biology developing in three semesters the molecular basis of structure and function of living cells.

Pre-req or concur: Chem 2520 (253), 2620, or 2920H, and one semester in Biological Sciences. Not open to students with credit for 613 or 4511 (511).

When: Tu Th 12:45-2:05 PM
Where: Pomerene Hall 150

Biochem 5613 has been previously only offered in the spring, but Biochemistry is a growing major and new requirement for many pre-health professions. Many professional schools including medical school require a Biochemistry course. Students may take Biochem 4511, Introduction to Biological Chemistry, or they can take Biochem 5613 and Biochem 5614 to get the content of Biochem 4511 in a more in-depth format.

Biochem 5614 is currently only offered in the autumn semester. However, depending on the enrollment in this new offering of Biochem 5613 in Autumn 2018 and student interest in pursuing a two-semester sequence, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will consider an additional offering of Biochem 5614 in Spring ’19.

If you are interested in declaring Biochemistry as a major or a minor or have any questions, please call the undergraduate advising office in Celeste 110 to schedule an appointment at (614) 292-1204.

Fulbright Week

The 2019-2020 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Core competition is now open.

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries for the 2019-2020 academic year.  Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators, as well as for professionals and many others. Interested faculty and professionals are encouraged to visit the Catalog of Awards to learn about opportunities in the field of Chemistry along with other fields.

The application deadline for most awards is August 1, 2018.  U.S. citizenship is required. Grant lengths vary in duration; applicants can propose projects for a period of two to 12 months, as specified in the award description. Flexible options may also be available.

In addition, please note that Ohio State will hold its 9th Annual Fulbright Week during March 26-30, 2018. This initiative is co-organized by the Office of International Affairs, the Graduate School, and the Undergraduate Fellowship Office.  As in the past, these three units have combined efforts to provide a full week of events acknowledging past Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays recipients and hosting workshops, information sessions and open houses designed to inform potential Ohio State faculty, undergraduate and graduate student applicants about the opportunities available through the Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays programs. All faculty, professionals and students are welcome to participate in a myriad of Fulbright Week activities.

Fullbright Week is for both graduate and undergraduate students. For more information on its targeted events, see this undergraduate flyer or this graduate flyer.
