OSU Pharmacy Summer Research Opportunity

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF) is a fellowship program for undergraduate sophomore and junior students who would like to know more about the discovery, use or mechanisms of drugs, and who would like to experience working in a lab. Students conduct research in the areas of pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmacy practice or medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy.

These fellowships also include a $4,000 stipend. Research activities can be directed by any faculty member in the College of Pharmacy who is willing to mentor a student for the summer. Additional information about research in these areas can be found under the About / Academic Divisions section of the College of Pharmacy website.

OSUCCC Summer Research Opportunity

CREATES-Undergrad is a full-time (40 hours/week), paid summer research experience for Ohio State undergraduate students interested in cancer research careers. Participants will conduct work in state-of-the-art research laboratories at OSUCCC – James and health sciences colleges at Ohio State.

The program includes a $4,000 stipend and student mentoring programs.

TEDxOhioStateUniversity – Magnify

TEDxOhioStateUniversity will hold its annual event on February 22. The theme this year is Magnify. This theme comes from desire to highlight groundbreaking concepts as well as scrutinize the seemingly smallest of details on the TEDx stage.

There will be 12 speakers – a mix of professors, grad students, and undergrads who are all Ohio State affiliated speaking on a wide variety of topics spanning from animation techniques to cellular stress response.

Light breakfast and light lunch will be provided. On Saturday, February 22, registration and breakfast will begin at 10:30am. The conference will conclude at 4:15pm.

Tickets are $15 for students or $20 for non-students. Ticket sales end Saturday, February 22 at 10:00am.

Peer Tutoring Job Openings

The Office of Student Life is accepting applications for Fall 2020 Peer Tutors. Peer Tutors assist students with drop-in tutoring at several locations across campus.

Peer tutors make $9.50 an hour and only have to work 4-8 hours a week. Tutoring shifts are on campus from 7-9pm on Sunday-Thursday nights, or 1pm-3pm on Tuesday-Thursday afternoons. If you have earned a B or higher in a math, chemistry, or physics class you are eligible to tutor in the subject.

Master’s in Forensic Toxicology & Analytical Genetics

The University of Kentucky is accepting applications for it’s Master’s in Forensics Toxicology & Analytical Genetics. The program has two areas of concentration: forensic toxicology and analytical genetics. Through the common core curriculum, students in both concentrations will have foundational information and skill set in advanced forensic science, writing, communication, professionalism, ethics, legal perspectives, and workplace-specific laboratory skills. The curriculum contains two internships which provide students with hands-on experiences necessary to be competitive in the job market upon exiting the program.

Tuition for this program is assessed at a special rate for all students (in- and out-of-state), which represents significant savings for out-of-state students. Graduates will be competitive for workforce deployment in the areas of: private industry drug testing, private DNA analysis, forensic governmental divisions, or hospital clinical labs.

Applications submitted by April 1 will be given priority for admission. Applications submitted after April 1 will be considered for any remaining openings. Learn more and apply here.

ASC Career Treks – Free Opportunities over Spring Break!

The Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences Career Trek is offering three neat opportunities for students to explore careers in the science industry! These opportunities take place over Spring Break (March 9th, 2020 to March 13th, 2020). Students will get to visit the company they choose, learn about the various careers offered, tour the facilities, and ask questions! Here are the three opportunities:

Monday, March 9th, 2020 from 1:45pm to 3:00pm — LabCorp in Dublin, Ohio

LabCorp would prefer juniors and seniors majoring in biology or microbiology to sign up, but encourage students majoring in life science to attend as well. There is a limit of 20 students able to register.

There is a limit of 35 students able to attend. Also, MEDPACE would like for students to submit their resumes prior to visiting. Students will need to have their own transportation to and from the companies. In addition, LabCorp, MEDPACE, and Camargo are not currently providing work visas for international students. Students are able to attend more than one of the Career Treks if they wish!

Career Treks gives students from the College of Arts and Sciences opportunities to learn more about career options by visiting various companies.

Networking: Environmental Sciences and Research

This is your chance to get comfortable with the “uncomfortable” and practice your communication skills. Explore and discuss opportunities within the environmental sciences and research industry by speaking with employers in the field. This is a unique opportunity for you to hear from experts who are attending just to answer your questions through a speed networking format where you will be provided with prompts to engage employers. You’ll have a chance to interact and network with these professionals during this exciting event. Interview with a Buckeye: February 18-19

Practice your interviewing skills.

Improve your interviewing confidence and your ability to make a positive impression, and increase your chances of succeeding in a post event (i.e. career fair, info session, etc.) interview by participating in the Interview with a Buckeye event February 18 and 19. Multiple time slots will be available on both days between 9am-4pm, with all mock interviews being held in 050 Denney Hall.

Connect with College of Arts and Sciences alumni who will provide feedback about your interviewing skills, answer questions you may have about interviewing, and provide tips for resume improvement. This is an excellent opportunity to network with Arts and Sciences alumni and to learn more about how they’re using their degree in the workplace.

Workshop – Science Communication and Social Media for Scientists

The School of Earth Sciences is hosting a Science Communication and Social Media for Scientists workshop this Friday, February 7, at 12:45pm in Mendenhall 291.

This fast pace and engaging workshop will introduce the importance of sharing your science through social media and the impact it can have. Topics include job and grant offers, grad school information, recruiting prospective students, keeping in touch with colleagues, and sharing published papers.

The event will be lead by Dr. Wendy Bohon, Science Communication Specialist at Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology.
