Course Spotlight: Chem 5440 – Computational Chemistry

Offered in Autumn 2023.
Mon, Wed, & Fri: 1:50pm – 2:45pm
Dr. Richard Spinney

Chemistry 5440 is an introduction to computational chemistry, a broad set of techniques designed to accurately model small molecules, their chemical and physical properties and interactions with other molecules. Students will examine the theory behind these techniques, such as:

  • Molecular Mechanics
  • Hartree-Fock
  • Density Functional
  • Advanced correlation theories

The course focuses on the practical application of these theories. Students will solve common problems in chemistry, so minimal math is required.

CHEM 5440 is very hands on and students will gain extensive experience using modern computational software such as Spartan and Gaussian.

Prerequisites: CHEM 2520, 2620, or 2920H (Organic Chemistry II)

Gap Year Research Opportunity

The Addiction Medicine Lab at Talbot Hall in Ohio State’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health is hiring a full-time researcher. They seek to hire a graduate from the class of Spring 2023 or Autumn 2022 who is interested in a gap year before perusing medical school or medical research.

This paid position is a great opportunity to get experience, skills, and publications in clinical science. The Addiction Medicine Lab does many things ranging from biomedical pain and withdrawal testing, to community survey research. This position entails involvement in both, as well as overseeing undergraduate assistants and working alongside lab supervisors Dr Julie Teater & Dr O. Trent Hall.

Apply for this gap year research position.

Master’s in Forensic Toxicology & Analytical Genetics

The University of Kentucky is accepting applications for it’s Master’s in Forensics Toxicology & Analytical Genetics. The program has two areas of concentration: Forensic Toxicology/Chemistry and Forensic/Analytical Genetics. Through the common core curriculum, students in both concentrations will have foundational information and skill set in advanced forensic science, writing, communication, professionalism, ethics, legal perspectives, and workplace-specific laboratory skills. The curriculum contains two internships which provide students with hands-on experiences necessary to be competitive in the job market upon exiting the program. This is a two-year program.

Tuition for this program is assessed at a special rate for all students (in- and out-of-state), which represents significant savings for out-of-state students. Graduates will be competitive for workforce deployment in the areas of: private industry drug testing, private DNA analysis, forensic governmental divisions, or hospital clinical labs.

Applications submitted by April 1, 2023 will be given priority for admission. Applications submitted after April 1 will be considered for any remaining openings. There is no GRE requirement. Check out the flyer and/or the website to learn more.

Translational pharmacology bridges across “the discovery, development, regulation, and use of pharmacologic agents to improve clinical outcome, and inform optimal use of therapeutics in patients.” Students will develop skills in preclinical or clinical trial design, toxicology, safety, or clinical pharmacology. This is also an opportunity to advance your career in research administration.

This program is designed for recent graduates and professionals with bioscience or animal science backgrounds who are interested in a career in clinical and translational pharmacology. There are two specializations:

  1. Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Trial Design
  2. Preclinical Toxicology and Safety Pharmacology

There are upcoming virtual Information Sessions on:

Admission is available for Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Applications for Autumn 2023 are due May 1st.

OSU Spring Undergraduate Research Festival

The annual Spring Undergraduate Research Festival is a research poster and presentation forum for students to share their mentored research projects with the broader academic community. It provides an opportunity for students to gain experience communicating their research in new ways, including designing a poster and discussing the project with Festival attendees.

The festival offers poster presentations during 60-minute sessions, as well as 10-minute oral presentations which allow for more creativity in presentation design.

As with the other forums hosted by UR&CI, the Spring Festival is not specific to any discipline; students from all disciplines across the university are invited to apply, and student presenters should prepare to discuss their research with a general audience. The Spring Festival is open to all undergraduate students at Ohio State who are participating in faculty-mentored research, and students can present on projects that are still ongoing – final results are not necessary for participation.

The 2023 Spring Research Festival will take place in-person on Thursday, April 6, in the TDAI Ideation Zone in Pomerene Hall. Exact session times will be provided closer to the event date.

The 2023 Spring Festival application will be open until March 19, 2023.
