University of North Texas Summer REU

The Chemistry Department at the University of North Texas is now accepting applications for its Summer 2023 NSF-REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) Program.

This program offers interdisciplinary research experiences at the forefront of the chemical sciences. Although our faculty research groups are grounded in “traditional” areas of chemistry (analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, biochemistry), most of their research projects cross boundaries between these areas. A unique aspect of this REU program is that all projects will involve collaboration between two or more research groups, including both experimental and computational researchers.

Participants will connect with career-active researchers at major international chemical companies and tour local companies to learn how chemistry plays a role in the economy. They will also engage in hands-on learning experiences and training in scientific communication and research ethics.

Eligibility:

  • Students who will not have earned their Bachelor’s degree prior to the program end date are eligible to apply.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Award:

  • $6,000 stipend
  • Up to $2,000 conference travel allowance
  • Accommodation at UNT for 10 weeks (May 21 – July 29, 2023)

Apply by March 8, 2023.

Big Ten Academic Alliance SROP

The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is designed to help historically underrepresented students explore opportunities for graduate study and academic careers. Over the course of nine weeks during the summer, Ohio State SROP participants will conduct research with a faculty mentor on a topic of mutual interest, and participate in activities crucial to preparation for graduate school, including a professional development series. At the end of the summer program, participants present their research at the Research Symposium to faculty, staff, and summer scholars.

The program provides students with a $5,000 stipend, travel, housing, meal plan, and an enriching research experience with a faculty mentor while providing faculty with opportunities to recruit talented and diverse students into their graduate programs.

The program will run from May 30 to July 28, 2023.

Underrepresented students are encouraged to apply. This includes students of color, first-generation college students, and students from low-income families, regardless of race or ethnicity.

SROP is affiliated with the Big Ten Academic Alliance. Informational videos can be found here.

The application deadline is February 10, 2023.

University of Cincinnati REU

The University of Cincinnati’s Chemistry REU helps students build research skills and develop as emerging professionals and independent scientists. Participants will learn about real-life challenges that scientists are currently addressing, such as “Data Science for Big Data in Chemistry” and “Sustainable Chemistry.” Both chemistry and biochemistry research projects are available.

Students will also work closely with faculty and graduate students while working on their research project, each of which has been designed to have a tangible result during the ten-week program, running from May 30th to August 4th.

The program also includes a weekly discussion series and an end of program poster session to highlight the results of students research. A stipend of $6,000 will be awarded to each student in the program, as well as housing and meals on UC’s campus.

Summer REU: Extreme Ultraviolet Engineering Research Center

Colorado State University and UC Berkeley are cohosting a summer Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) in Summer 2023. This REU focuses on extreme ultraviolet high power lasers and their applications, including materials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering. REU programs are sponsored by the NSF and provide an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students to get hands-on experience working in active research labs- a great asset to list on your resume or graduate school application.

Students accepted to this 10-week REU program will conduct research at either the Extreme Ultraviolet Engineering Research Center (EUV ERC) at Colorado State University or at University of California, Berkeley.

Each student will be assigned a mentor to guide them throughout the project. This EUV REU program will provide students with a unique opportunity designed for them to better understand EUV science and technology and to become involved in groundbreaking EUV-related research that is technically and scientifically challenging, and highly interdisciplinary.

Participants will be provided with a $5000 stipend, housing, and some meals.

More specific details can be found in this project descriptions document.

The application deadline is February 22, 2023.
