REU University of Akron: Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Applications are open for the 2024 Summer Research Experience (REU) program in the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at The University of Akron.

Students will participate in a 9-week internship to investigate a fundamental question within the broad disciplines of polymer science and polymer engineering, including chemistry, physics, engineering, and biomaterials. These interns will take part in research and career development activities, discussions outlining their research progress and visits to regional companies.  The summer will culminate with an oral or poster presentation of each intern’s research results at the Northeast Ohio NSF-REU Undergraduate Research Conference.

Support for this 9-week summer 2024 program includes a $5,850 stipend. In addition, on-campus housing is provided.

UPenn REU: Catalyst Research Development and Molecular Dynamics

The University of Pennsylvania Department of Chemistry is accepting applications for its REU titled, “Novel Techniques and Applications in Catalyst Research Development and Molecular Dynamics” (CatResDev). This is a 10-week summer research experience.

The CatResDev REU research areas span a significant space across catalysis: method development, catalyst development, and synthetic applications, as well as extension into molecular dynamics and beyond. CatResDev exposes REU students to high throughput experimentation (HTE) techniques that are unique to Penn Chemistry and currently in high demand. Exposure to HTE provides a distinct experience for undergraduates with long-term leverage into both academic and industrial pathways.

While working on their projects, students will learn the fundamentals of success in science via training, mentoring, and industrial partnerships.  Programs focus on research safety, professional development, networking, and the opportunity to learn from one another and leading experts in the field.

George Washington Summer Program Advancing Research on Cancer (GW-SPARC)

The George Washington Summer Program Advancing Research on Cancer (GW-SPARC) engages undergraduates who will form the next generation of scientific leaders in a mentored summer research experience at the George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center. This program is intended for undergraduates considering Ph.D. training and a career in research. Candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research are strongly encouraged to apply.

This summer program fosters active engagement in cutting-edge research, exposure to contemporary cancer research techniques, understanding of health disparities and impact of cancer in different communities, and preparation for research careers.

Stipend: The program will provide $4,000 for 10 weeks participation. Additional funds up to $500 will be provided for travel to/from GW. Students are encouraged to stay in GW housing which will be provided by the program at no cost to the student.

MICHR Summer Research Program

Program Information:

  • 10-week full-time immersion program: May 28 – August 2, 2024
  • Engage in clinical, translational science, & health disparities research
  • Work with a mentor on an ongoing, funded research project
  • Orientation and required training in the protection of human subjects and the responsible conduct of research
  • Meet with community members who partner with academics in research
  • Classroom work and team projects
  • Participating students will be hired as temporary U-M employees and paid a salary

Eligibility:

  • Graduating college seniors, master’s degree students, and health professions degree students
  • Students enrolled in any health-related programs (e.g. biomedical engineering, dentistry, kinesiology, medicine, nursing, public health, social work, etc)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

Beckman Scholars Program: Info Session 1/18

The Beckman Scholars Program is funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. In 2022, The Ohio State University joined 13 other universities to participate in the Beckman Scholars Program. This funding allows for 2 exceptionally talented, full-time undergraduate students to participate in a 15-month mentored research experience. This funding will last for 3 years, with support for 2 students each year.

The 2024-2025 application deadline is February 5, 2024.

Professors Christine Thomas and Venkat Gopalan will conduct an information session through Zoom on Thursday, January 18 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.  Please contact Emily Potter at potter.276@osu.edu to request the Zoom meeting link. ASC Launch Your Career: Science and Research Resume Review

Tomorrow, January 17, from 5:30pm-7:00pm, ASC Career Success is hosting a science and research-focused resume review. The goal of this event is to help science-focused students interested in pursuing careers in environmental science, sustainability, biotechnology, and manufacturing, better craft and tailor their resumes with real-time industry feedback.

At this in-person workshop, students can expect an interactive experience to learn more about what to put on their resumes, especially as it pertains to more technical fields in Science and Research. This is a great opportunity for students to perfect their resumes before the Spring Career Fair on January 23!

Representatives from the Ohio EPA, Andelyn Biosciences, and Proctor & Gamble (P&G) will assist in reviewing student resumes before the career fair, allowing you to get direct feedback on crafting a successful resume for science and research-focused fields. Some employers may also offer on-site interviews following the event. To prepare for this opportunity, students should bring a copy of their resume that they can edit or make changes to. Students can expect some one-on-one career coaching and consultation for improvements to their documents and materials.

Spots are limited, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible. All ASC undergraduate and graduate students, exploration students, and recent alumni are invited to attend. Please check Handshake for the most up-to-date event information.

Scholarship & Training Opportunity: MARC T34 at OSU

This is Ohio State’s first T34 grant for Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The mission of the “Molecules to Society” MARC T34 at Ohio State is to increase diversity in the next generation of biomedical scholars doing impactful research. This will be accomplished by providing undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups with a research-focused training program that includes courses, experiential learning, faculty and graduate student mentoring, and peer-support.

2024 OSU Spring Career Fair

The annual Ohio State Spring Career Fair will take place on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. in the Ohio Union Grand Ball Room and Performance Hall.

The event is open to all current Ohio State University students and recent graduates and provides an opportunity for students to network with employers and learn about internship and career opportunities. The event will be held in two venues in the Ohio Union: The Grand Ballroom and the Performance Hall.

Attending employers recruit across a broad range of disciplines, including opportunities for science and technology students in areas such as laboratory based research and development in medical and industrial settings.

Advanced research via Handshake is recommended to determine if a particular employer of interest will be in attendance.

Attending employers seek to fill full-time entry-level positions as well as summer internships.

Pre-registration or RSVP for the Spring Career Fair is not required, but you are encouraged to indicate interest through Handshake.

  • Current Students: A valid BuckID is required to enter the fair on the day of the event.
  • Recent Graduates: We welcome you to the event and request that you drop off a copy of your resume at the registration desk upon arrival.
