Summer Research at Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University is now accepting applications for their Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering during summer 2020. The program is run by the Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering (VINSE) and focuses on interdisciplinary nanoscale research at the interface of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering.

The program includes hands-on research in state-of-the-art facilities, group social activities and a banquet for participants, optional outreach opportunities to high school students, and various seminars, workshops, and field trips. Participants will also have the opportunity to work directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups. A $5000 stipend is awarded to participants with a $500 travel allowance along with room and board.

The application deadline is February 5th.

Course Spotlight: CHEM 5520 – Nanochemistry

Offered in Spring 2020.

Nanoscale materials are materials with nm size dimensions, with properties that exist in the border between molecules and solids. Due to the unique properties that emerge in this regime, these materials have already impacted numerous industries including electronics, energy generation and storage, and medicine. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to nanoscale materials, their synthesis, their unique properties, and applications.

Prerequisites: Students should have completed General Chemistry II (Chem 1220, 1620, 1920H) and will need instructor permission.

REU: Nanoscale Assembly of Molecules and Materials

The colors of butterfly wings, the strength of an abalone shell, and the adhesive properties of gecko feet arise from the arrangement of smaller building blocks which comprise these structures. REU students at Indiana University Bloomington will engage in in-depth study of materials chemistry and, in particular, how materials assemble from smaller entities (atoms and molecules) into larger structures and the function of assembled forms. The projects for REU students include both synthesis and characterization of materials and their building blocks, with opportunities for students with interests in all areas of chemistry.

Students in the program will engage in a 10-week summer research experience beginning in May 2020. They will participate in weekly career development discussions and visit local companies such as Eli Lilly and CRANE Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Participants will receive a $500 per week stipend, a travel allowance up to $500, on-campus housing, and a meal allowance.

Course Spotlight: Nanochemistry

With Spring Scheduling Appointments just around the corner, now is the perfect time to think about your upcoming semester schedule.  This spring,Carbon Nanotube . Dr. Josh Goldberger will be teaching Chem 5520 – Nanochemistry.

The course is an introduction introduction to fundamental concepts of nanoscience, including the structure and synthesis of inorganic and organic materials at the nanoscale, new properties that emerge, their assembly and integration into technology

When: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9:35-10:55am

Prerequisites: Students should have completed General Chemistry II (Chem 1220, 1620, 1920H) and will need instructor permission.
