As Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza is being discovered in more locations across both the Midwest and Eastern USA, please be aware of heightened biosecurity measures you should take to protect your birds. Below are various resources:
- CLICK below for the Ohio Poultry Association – Ohio State University Extension short social media video collaboration on biosecurity. Please share this out with clients if you have not done so.
- See the ODA Fact Sheet on HPAI. HPAI Biosecurity Backyard flock press release 2022 v 2.0 This is a good printout to share.
- OSU’s Dr. Scott Kenney just published a fact sheet on HPAI on Ohioline. It is another great handout to have and goes into much more detail. LINK
- OSUE High Path Avian Influenza Update from 1/19/2022: High Path Avian Influenza Update 2022.01.19
- The USDA Defend the Flock pages is a vast storage of knowledge with handouts and links. It also has translations in Spanish(and others) if needed. LINK
- ADDL in Reynoldsburg will test for HPAI for free. Samples should be submitted via a vet. CLICK HERE for a list of vets who see poultry. Any vet can submit, however.
Common FAQ’s as of 3/4/2022 per Tim McDermott, OSU Extension Educator, Franklin County:
- Do we have HPAI in Ohio? “I have not seen any confirmation as of this email. I suspect we do, however. Ohio is at the confluence of two major migration pathways. (See Dr. Kenney’s fact sheet) We are early in annual migration and will see this migration steadily increase until May.”
- Do we have an idea of how long this will last? “My opinion is: this will worsen before it improves due to migration patterns. See question #1.
- Does HPAI affect humans? “See the CDC’s Avian Influenza summary for answers and a link to share with clients.”
- Where has this been found so far? “This has been confirmed in commercial operations in Kentucky and Indiana and backyard flocks from the Carolinas to Maine and both Iowa and Michigan, plus I may be missing some. Not Ohio yet, but almost every state around us.”
