ACS Career Workshop

The American Chemical Society is hosting a chemistry career-related workshop titled “Finding Your Path” on Saturday, February 18th from 10:30am-2:00pm in CBEC 130.

This is a wonderful opportunity to network, as well as learn about what it is like to work in a chemistry field!

The event will host a speaker from the American Chemical Society and many members from the American Chemical Society-Columbus Section. During the workshop, you will learn about the four sectors of chemistry employment and which best aligns to your values and strengths. You will also learn about planning your next steps to obtaining your ideal position, and effective networking and job searching.

A boxed lunch will be provided during the workshop. There will also be opportunities to win chemistry related prizes.

The event is free to all Chemistry students from the Columbus, Ohio area. Parking will be validated for students outside of OSU campus.

Those who plan to attend must RSVP by February 11th on the Columbus ACS website.

University of North Texas NSF-REU Program

The Chemistry Department at the University of North Texas is accepting applications for their Summer 2017 NSF-REU Program.  Students looking for an exciting interdisciplinary  research experience encompassing many aspects of computational and experimental chemistry are invited to apply. The ten-week program will tentatively begin the last week of May or the first week of June. Participants will be given a $5,000 stipend, and housing will be provided.  Funds are available to cover travel costs to and from the REU site, which is located in the northern outskirts of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

If you are interested, submit your application, personal statement, transcripts and two letters of recommendation by the application deadline.

Rosetta Commons Paid Summer Research

There are two opportunities for summer research, both out of state, one internationally!

Applications Due: February 1, 2017

Rosetta Commons
is offering paid summer research internships to undergraduates interested in research in biomolecular structure prediction and design.  The summer includes a one-week Code School, eight weeks of hands-on research in one of the Rosetta labs, and finishes with attendance and poster presentations at the Rosetta Conference.


Monetary support is provided through an NSF REU grant.

Possible research projects span methods development in biomolecular design and applications from cancer and biofuels to drug and vaccine design.

One intern will be placed internationally at Correia Lab in Switzerland, and the other will be placed at the industry site EMD Serono in Boston.


Requirements:

  • College Sophomores or Juniors preferred
  • Major in computer science, engineering, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and/or biophysics
  • Available for at least 10 weeks during the summer of 2017
  • Interest in graduate school
  • U.S.citizens, permanent residents, and U.S. nationals are eligible.
  • While not required, we seek candidates with some combination of experiences in scientific or academic research, C++/Python/*nix/databases, software engineering, object-oriented programming, and/or collaborative development (git).

NSF REU Summer Program at University of Cincinnati

The University of Cincinnati is offering a 10-week summer program for students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in chemistry. Those accepted into the REU program will experience the excitement and challenges of conducting research, while developing as independent scientists. Each student will have close contact with a faculty mentor in their general area of interest as an important means of achieving this goal.

Accepted applicants will get the opportunity to interact with the local chemical community and receive a $5,000 stipend for the 10-week program. On-campus housing and meals are included.

REU Experience: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, opportunities are available in Chemical Biology and fields of chemistry including analytical, inorganic, materials, organic, physical, and theoretical.

The program provides a $5,000 stipend, university housing, and round trip travel costs up to eight hundred dollars.

National Science Foundation Sponsoring Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities at University of Cincinnati

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is sponsoring undergraduate summer research opportunities at the University of Cincinnati!

This 10-week research program, which takes place between May 30 and August 4, 2017, will emphasize sustainable chemistry and chemistry related to health. There will also be an opportunity for students to present research findings at a regional or national meeting following the experience.

Also available to students will be opportunities to work with internationally renowned faculty, social programs, and on-campus housing and an accompanying meal plan. Additionally, a $5,000 stipend will also be paid to undergraduate researchers over 10 weeks of participation.

Covestro is a producer of high-performance plastics and advanced polymers and the company is currently looking for candidates for 2017 summer internships.

The  internship will involve working with one of the following: Polyurethanes (PUR), Polycarbonates (PCS), Coating, Adhesive and Specialty Raw Materials (CAS), Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs (PSRA) or Regional Technical Services (RTS).

  • Enrollment in a Bachelor Degree program with a major and/or focus in one of the following majors: Chemistry, Polymer Science, Plastics, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related STEM degrees

  • Interpersonal and communication skills: an ability to interact with and establish good working relationships with diverse individuals
  • Project coordination with the ability to be proactive and identify creative, effective technical solutions
  • Demonstrated PC skills and ability to work within Microsoft Office Programs
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Willingness and ability to be placed in any of the aforementioned internship opportunities.

Graduate Programs in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines

A great opportunity has just opened up for undergraduate students considering graduate school. Mark Ferris, an Ohio State alumni, will be giving a short recruiting talk and answering questions about his program and graduate school life.

Mark is currently in a PhD program for chemical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, located in Golden, Colorado. He is very excited to return to his alma mater to talk to undergraduate students about all this program has to offer in the fields of chemical and biological engineering!

The talk will be this Friday, November 18th, at 1:30 PM in CBEC 110/120. FREE pizza will be provided!
