The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh is opening a 2017 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (SURF Pitt 2017).  Summer research opportunities are available for up to five female or minority undergraduate students majoring in chemistry who are expected to graduate in 2018. 

Students selected for the program will receive a stipend of $360 per week for 10 weeks of summer research starting on May 30th.  Students will also be provided free housing at Pennsylvania Hall on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Applicants are required to send their cover letter, official or unofficial transcript, and a prioritized list of four Chemistry Department research groups in which they are interested.  Two letters of recommendation must be sent directly to Debbie Hunt (debhunt@pitt.edu).

Rosetta Commons Paid Summer Research

There are two opportunities for summer research, both out of state, one internationally!

Applications Due: February 1, 2017

Rosetta Commons
is offering paid summer research internships to undergraduates interested in research in biomolecular structure prediction and design.  The summer includes a one-week Code School, eight weeks of hands-on research in one of the Rosetta labs, and finishes with attendance and poster presentations at the Rosetta Conference.


Monetary support is provided through an NSF REU grant.

Possible research projects span methods development in biomolecular design and applications from cancer and biofuels to drug and vaccine design.

One intern will be placed internationally at Correia Lab in Switzerland, and the other will be placed at the industry site EMD Serono in Boston.


Requirements:

  • College Sophomores or Juniors preferred
  • Major in computer science, engineering, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and/or biophysics
  • Available for at least 10 weeks during the summer of 2017
  • Interest in graduate school
  • U.S.citizens, permanent residents, and U.S. nationals are eligible.
  • While not required, we seek candidates with some combination of experiences in scientific or academic research, C++/Python/*nix/databases, software engineering, object-oriented programming, and/or collaborative development (git).

University of Akron Summer Research in Polymer Science and Engineering

The application deadline is Friday, February 10, 2017.
We are happy to announce that  2017 summer research experience (REU) program in the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at The University of Akron is open to apply.
 
This competitive REU program are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, The University of Akron, and corporate sponsors. Students will participate in an 11-week internship to investigate a fundamental question within the broad disciplines of polymer science and polymer engineering, including chemistry, physics, engineering, and biomaterials.  These interns will take part in research and career development activities, discussions outlining their research progress and visits to regional companies.  The summer will culminate with an oral or poster presentation of each intern’s research results at the Northeast Ohio NSF-REU Undergraduate Research Conference.

  • Letter of application clearly stating field of interest
  • Copy of transcript(s)
  • Two letters of reference. Letters should be from an easily-contacted professor or supervisor who has knowledge of the student’s scientific skills.
Stipends will be $7,000 ($2,000 are used by students to pay for on-campus housing and related expenses).
 
The program will begin on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, and will end on Friday, August 11, 2017.

West Virginia University SURI Program

The West Virginia University Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute continues to cultivate the next generation of neuroscientists with an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in their 9-week Summer Undergraduate Research Internship (SURI) program. Accepted students will gain invaluable experience as they study and work in high-tech laboratories across almost 50 laboratories housed in modern research facilities.

Students accepted to the 2017 SURI program will receive a $4,000 salary, paid throughout the program, plus housing in a WVU dormitory, located near the Medical Center Campus.

Washington University Research

Are you looking for summer research or post-baccalaureate research opportunities? There are several programs at Washington University that may interest you!
 
OGR  The McDonnell Genome Institute at Washington University in St. Louis is now accepting applications for the Opportunities in Genomics Research (OGR) program (genome.wustl.edu). The OGR programs are directed to increasing the number of underrepresented students who pursue PhD’s in genomics and related fields. There are two OGR mentored research programs: Undergraduate Scholars, a 10 – week summer program and Extensive Study, a one-year post-baccalaureate program that includes research and enrichment activities such as GRE and graduate school preparation.

SPORE The SPORE in Leukemia program offers a one-year post-baccalaureate  program for students interested in medical research. The goal of this program is to provide post-baccalaureate trainees  from underrepresented backgrounds with an intensive 1-year exposure to leukemia-related research.  The trainees will have the opportunity to work with and be mentored by a top leukemia researcher.
 
Program features: Both programs include mentored research with premier investigators in genomics, genetics, cancer biology and other disciplines. Program benefits: competitive stipend/salary, travel to St. Louis and housing (summer program only).

Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Located in Bronx, New York and a part of Yeshiva University, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine is an excellent choice for a Graduate Program.  Their Graduate Division of Biomedical Sciences is now accepting students who want to pursue a career in research in the biomedical field.

SURI at Ohio State

The Summer Undergraduate Research Institute is a program put on by the Undergraduate Research Office and occurs each summer at the Columbus campus.

The goal is to bring student researchers together through professional development programs, social events, athletic events, and digital communication.

SURI participants are then invited to present their research at the Fall Undergraduate Research Student Poster Forum on September 15.

SURI is free and open to research in all disciplines. The website provides information for events and how to register.SURI2016

The dates for this year are May 23-July 29.

SURI: University of North Texas Chemistry NSF-REU Program

UNT

The application deadline for this opportunity is March 1.

The Chemistry Department at the University of North Texas is now accepting applications for the Summer 2016 NSF-REU Program. The program focuses on research in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Many of the projects will involve collaboration between experimental and computational chemists. The program is ten weeks long beginning on June 6. Participants are given a $5,000 stipend, plus housing. Funds are also available to defray travel costs.

SURI: Petroleum Engineering at the University of Texas

UT PGE hosts a summer research program called SURI (Summer Undergraduate Research Internship) where students come to UT and work alongside their faculty. They are always looking for undergraduate students to visit us and gain insight into the field of Petroleum Engineering. Right now, they are actively recruiting interns for summer 2016.  Details are below.

UT PGE is currently looking for talented undergraduates from across the country to visit our department and learn more about research in Petroleum Engineering. Petroleum engineering is an exciting field of professional dedicated to providing engery that powers a modern society. UT PGE is currently accepting applications looking for interns to work for 10 weeks in the summer of 2016 for a salary of $4000 plus on-campus housing, a meal plan, and travel to Austin. The interns will be mentored by a UT PGE faculty member and work on a project that is of interest to them. This is a great opportunity for an undergraduate to gain research experience and a taste of the grad school life. SURI will consider application students from all engineering and science majors with at least a 3.25 GPA. This program only accepts students who are U.S. Citizens or permanent residents. The deadline to apply is January 10, 2016.
