Ohio Youth Skillathons – Reg Due July 15

As many of you know, the 2020 Ohio State Fair has been cancelled due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus -including the 2020 Ohio State Fair Skillathons. To support the continued learning needs of youth livestock and companion animal exhibitors throughout Ohio, Ohio State University Extension and the Department of Animal Sciences are pleased to offer virtual Skillathons this year. Our 4-H Animal Sciences team will conduct online Ohio Youth Skillathons in 2020 with the chance to compete for the highest score. Unlike in-person State Skillathons, no cash awards will be involved. These Skillathons will encompass the same educational materials, by species, that would typically be evaluated at the Ohio State Fair, and give the opportunity to put your 4-H project knowledge to the test! Please save the date(s) for the species you would like to participate in below.

Dates/times, rules, and registration for Ohio Youth Skillathons are now online at: https://ohio4h.org/animalsciences/ohio-youth-skillathons

3-7 Graders Needed for Dandelion Detectives Study

Can you help spread the word? We’re looking for youth Dandelion Detectives!

Dandelion Detectives is a STEM activity targeting 3-7 graders where participants work together to measure the value of weeds for insects. Dandelion Detectives will take place over the summer of 2020 and participants can be located in Ohio or surrounding midwestern states.

The Dandelion Detectives project can be completed in one day of your choice (June-August) and involves: taking a pre and post questionnaire about insects; observing insects at an “Observation Dandelion” created using simple provided materials and sugar water mixture; and conducting a lawn weed survey. Participating Dandelion Detectives will be able to upload their findings to a project website. At the end of the project, students will receive a “Student Scientist” certificate and will have access to all of the data collected by the project team!

Toolkits containing all materials to participate in Dandelion Detectives can be ordered for $10 (to cover shipping fees) at this link.

We also offer a do-it-yourself option here.

Yesterday, Dr. Mary Gardiner presented a webinar (for adults/educators/advisors) about the program; the recording is linked below.
