Washington County Endowment Dinner is a Success

The Washington County 4-H Endowment Committee would like to thank all of our community members, volunteers, 4-H members and parents for a successful event.  We are excited with the success of 405 meals sold that night and our live and silent auctions were profitable as well.  The committee is excited to report on our event that raised over $32,000 for the program in Washington County.  The committee is planning for the year and these funds will be used to support Washington County 4-H and its members.  The committee is helping to reduce the cost of all project books by covering part of the cost of project books and resource books.  They are also providing scholarships for higher education, camp, and trips.  The committee also uses the funds to help support camp activities at Hervida 4-H camp each summer.  The committee is also looking at other opportunities to help support and grow 4-H in Washington County.  We are blessed each year with a successful event and are looking forward to our next fundraiser- The Pancake Breakfast at the Washington County Fair on Monday September 1 from 8am to 10am.

Save the Date- Market Turkey, Chickens and Duck

All market poultry for Washington County have been ordered and arrival dates have been set.  Please note that the following dates are the week we expect the birds to arrive.  The birds will be shipped and available for pick up at Heritage Cooperative located at 219 Third Street Marietta.  Members will be notified once birds ship with an approximate time for pick up, however this time needs to remain flexible as shipping times and days may vary.  Members should be ready to receive birds and bring something to transport them home in.  Pens at home should be cleaned and disinfected and ready for new arrivals.  It is also good practice to call the feed store to order feed before you receive the birds.  This allows the store to be sure they have feed in stock for you when you arrive.  The following are the days that birds will ship.  Market turkey- May 20, market chicken- July 8, and market duck- July 8.  If you have questions or need additional information, please contact our office at 740-376-7431.

Car Wash Guidelines for Marietta & Belpre

Is your club or organization thinking about having a car wash to beat the summer heat and raise some funds?

Vehicle wash water often contains detergents, oil, grease, nutrients, and toxic metals. This has a potential to add additional nutrients and harmful chemicals to streams & rivers. Left untreated, the polluted discharges can not only affect the aquatic life in waterways, but could eventually affect drinking water supplies.

If you are planning a car wash please read this information (attached)

Real Money Program at Waterford High School

With the help of many community volunteers who staffed 14 business booths, sophomores at the Waterford High School recently participated in a Real Money Real World simulation. Students were assigned a career for the simulation. They also spent their monthly salary visiting the various booths making spending choices based on their family situation hoping they would have enough money to make ends meet at the end of the month.

The program is a product of OSU Extension and was organized for the school by Bruce Zimmer, 4-H Extension Educator in collaboration with Waterford High School teacher Beth Morris. Here are some pictures of our volunteers that helped out!

Updated 4-H Meeting Attendance Requirement

How are you doing on 4-H Club meeting attendance? The Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee recently updated the meeting attendance policy for all members. Here is an overview of this meeting attendance requirement:

  • Members must enroll annually by April 1. The 4-H year is November 1 – October 31.
  • 4-H members must attend a minimum of 5 club meetings per year to be considered a “4-H participant in good standing”. One county-wide 4-H activity can be counted as a “club meeting” per 4-H year. Attendance policies and records will be governed by the local club constitution and by-laws.
    • Club members must attend at least 3 club meetings/events by 4-H Project Judging or Skillathon to be considered a “4-H participant in good standing” and eligible for local and state fair exhibitions. The 3 meetings must be club meetings, not a county-wide 4-H activity. Club attendance will be tracked by club advisors and reported to OSU Extension.
  • The Club will hold a minimum of eight to ten meetings annually that include business, social and recreation activities, and hands-on fun learning.
  • Members must complete at least one 4-H project each year.

Attention Club News Reporters

Part of the 4-H club news reporter’s responsibilities is to share news about your 4-H club meetings and events. After a club meeting write a short article about the big items of Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. Once the article is complete you can ask your advisor to post it on your club Facebook page or share it with families. You can also ask a parent to help you upload it to the the Marietta Times for printing.

Here are the easy instructions for uploading a 4-H club article. You can also add pictures of special events! Make sure you identify the people in the picture by providing their names.
