HealthU Retreat for Youth

HealthU

Are you a 4-H’er interested in health? Do you see yourself potentially working in health one day? Nutritionist? Therapist? Nurse? Athletic Trainer? Geneticist?

What: Health University (HealthU) is a weekend camp in October focused on Healthy Living for high schoolers in Ohio 4-H. Join us at 4-H Camp Ohio for a weekend as we explore four of the 9 Dimensions of Wellness and explore health-related careers. We will be exploring the following four tracks of wellness:

  • Physical wellness allows a person to engage in activities of daily living without experiencing undue fatigue or exhaustion. The physical dimension of wellness is supported through health behaviors, which include exercise, eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol intake, not smoking, and getting adequate sleep each night.
  • Emotional wellness involves recognizing, accepting, and expressing feelings. Adequate rest is required for wellness in this dimension. If an individual’s mental function is hindered by stress and lack of sleep, they may struggle with accurately assessing a situation which then triggers negative emotional responses and disrupts emotional wellness.
  • Social wellness requires the ability to trust and respect other people and leads to the creation of supportive partnerships and friendships. Being socially well allows one to develop and maintain intimacy, and to have empathy and respect for others.
  • Creative wellness allows a person to appreciate and/or participate in a diverse range of arts or cultural experiences, and to value and cherish the surrounding world. Freely expressing thoughts and emotions through dance, song, drawing, painting, or writing are some of the ways to engage in creative wellness.

County Fair Livestock Sale Checks – Pickup Oct 2 & 3

Checks will no longer be mailed. On October 2, 2022 between 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm and October 3, 2022 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at the Senior Fair Board Office, 922 Front St, Marietta. This change is being made due to the necessity to collect an IRS W-9 form.

Further explanation why a W-9 is needed by all county fair livestock sale participants.

To be compliant with IRS requirements, the Fair Board is required to file 1099 MISC for anyone who sells their project for $600 or more.  To file these forms, the County Fairboard is required to have a completely filled-out W-9 for each person going through the livestock sale. This form also helps as an aid to the youth in preparing their tax return.  The proper reporting of this income on a tax return does not mean that they will have to pay any income tax, just that a return may be required.

The following is a paragraph from IRS Publication 225 found on page 75 of the 2020 edition explaining the reporting of 4-H projects:

4-H Club or FFA project. If an individual participates in a 4-H Club or National FFA Organization (FFA) project, any net income received from sales or prizes related to the project may be subject to income tax. Report the net income as “Other income” on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8. If necessary, attach a statement showing the gross income and expenses. The net income may not be subject to SE tax if the project is primarily for educational purposes and not for profit, and is completed by the individual under the rules and economic restrictions of the sponsoring 4-H or FFA organization. Such a project is generally not considered a trade or business. For information on the filing requirements and other tax information for dependents, see Pub. 929.

As previously announced from the Washington County Fair Board about the distribution of 2022 Sale Checks:

Checks will no longer be mailed. On October 2, 2022 between 2:00 and 8:00 pm and October 3, 2022 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at the Senior Fair Board Office, 922 Front St, Marietta. This change is being made due to the necessity to collect an IRS W-9 form.

A W-9 must be completed and turned in when the sale check is picked up.  Complete details are included below.

Here is the letter regarding the collection of W-9’s: 2022 Letter about W-9 requirement

Exhibitors can print the W-9 and bring the completed form to weigh-in or turn it in during the fair to the Senior Fairboard Office. The forms can also be brought when the checks are picked up on Oct 2 or 3. Here is the W-9: IRS W-9

Champion Purchases Service Dog with Sale

Colten Work of Stockport, Ohio was awarded the Grand Champion Steer at the Barlow Independent Fair on Saturday September 24, 2022.  Colten was excited for his accomplishment but had another goal in mind with his Grand Champion Steer, Buckeye.  Colten had met a young girl with autism who was fundraising for a service dog from 4 Paws for Ability. Harper Jo Shivener had been raising funds for her own service dog and the family needed to raise $20,000. Colton is a member of the Palmer Lads & Lassies 4-H Club.

Service dogs along with their training can cost up to $60,000. 4 Paws for Ability works with families and tasks them with raising $20,000.  Shivener was diagnosed at the early age of 2 and struggles with speech and communication as well as running from family and caregivers.  The service dog will allow Harper to take part in family outings as it is trained for her safety.  Harper’s service dog will be trained for tethering and tracking if she would get away, as well as assisting her with day-to-day tasks and redirect and keep her calm when needed.

Colten along with his family, parents Shawn and Leah Work and sister Callie helped to solicit buyers, talk to fair goers about Harper Jo, and wore t-shirts in support of her fundraising efforts.  Colten was able to help Harper reach her goal and put her over the top when his Grand Champion Steer sold for $10,500 at Saturday night’s livestock sale and the Barlow Independent Fair.  All of Colten’s earnings with be donated to Harper Jo and she will be able to bring home her forever friend in the near future.

These local businesses contributed to meet the $10,500 goal: Full Circle Oil Field Services, Inc., Fulton Show Cattle & Feeds, Gates Farms, Hall Drilling, Hall Financial Advisors, Integrity Oil Field Services, Michael & Emily Seaman, Moore’s Deer Processing, Niberts Insulation, Pine Ridge Meat Processing, R.C. & Son Construction, Seaman Farms LLC, Sherlock BP Oil Company, Skinner Firestone, Staley Countryside Meat Processing Co. National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador program provides an excellent opportunity for 4-H’ers active in shooting sports projects to affording teens the opportunities to demonstrate their skills in leadership, citizenship and community service through ambassador activities that promote and encourage the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will receive training that will allow them to return to your county and advocate for the program at the county, regional, and state level. Some Ambassadors may be asked to support national events as well. Ambassadors provide public relations support at special events such as donor/sponsor functions and serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, helping to make 4-H and the 4-H Shooting Sports Programs more visible. The Ambassador’s further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations, and team building.
