The OSU Junior Swine Day is Saturday, March 25th, 2017. OSU Junior Swine Day is held in two locations on March 25th, 2017 – OSU Columbus and OSU ATI Wooster, with the same sessions offered at each location. Registration is due by March 19th, 2017 and is $10.00 per person. A flyer can be downloaded at www.go.osu.edu/livestock from the Calendar of Events page. Youth attending will participate and be certified in PQA Plus (Pork Quality Assurance) and this will meet the county QA requirement for the Fairfield County Junior Fair. Ohio Beef Expo Judging Contest and Quality Assurance is 3/17/2017
The Ohio Beef Expo Judging Contest and Quality Assurance Training will be on FRIDAY, March 17th, 2017, at the Ohio Expo Center. Note – This is now held on Friday, NOT on Saturday as in the past. Information about Beef Expo can be downloaded at www.go.osu.edu/livestock from the Calendar of Events page. This Quality Assurance Training will meet the Fairfield County QA requirement. Wilmington College – Little International Showmanship Contest
The Wilmington College – Little International is a showmanship contest designed to teach 4-H and FFA members how to show multiple species of livestock. This year Little International will be held on April 1st, 2017. This event will be located at the Wilmington College Equine Center. Registration will be from 7:00AM-8:00AM. From 8:00AM-9:00AM we will have demonstrations on how to show each species, with the contest starting promptly afterwards.
There will be THREE age divisions:
- Beginner (Ages 9-12)
- Intermediate (Ages 13-16)
- Senior (Ages 17-21)
There will be FOUR species that will be shown:
- Equine
- Beef Cattle
- Sheep
- Goats
Participants can either choose to show all four species OR they can pick whichever species they would like to show; however it is a great learning experience. ALL ANIMALS AND SHOW EQUIPMENT WILL BE PROVIDED.
This is a perfect opportunity for youth to learn or enhance their showmanship skills and gain new interests in showing livestock.

Join the NEW Fairfield County 4-H Meat Judging Team!
We are excited to recruit two volunteers, Caitlyn Black and James Maynard, to serve as club advisors and team coaches of the newly forming Fairfield County 4-H Meat Judging Team! Practices and contests are very soon – get ready to learn more about beef, pork, and lamb (retail classes, carcass classes, and wholesale classes); retail ID, written test portion of the contests, meat science education, practice and contest information).
They will be hosting an Open House at the Ag Center (831 College Avenue) on Monday, February 20th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
This is a great opportunity for 4-H youth livestock exhibitors who participate in the Muscle Quality and Performance/Carcass Contests for the Fairfield County Fair! MQP/Carcass Projects not required for participation and membership to the 4-H Meat Judging Team. Members must hold 4-H membership in a Fairfield County 4-H Club to participate. Open to all 4-H youth ages 8 (and in the 3rd grade) to 18 as of 1/1/2017.
Last Call: Ohio 4-H Conference Registrations!
We have extended our county deadline to accept registrations for volunteers and teens to attend the 2017 Ohio 4-H Conference on Saturday, March 10th, 2017 at the Columbus Convention Center through Wednesday, February 8th at 4:00 p.m.
The Ohio 4-H Conference is the largest gathering of 4-H volunteers in the United States! We welcome nearly 1,500 teen and adult volunteers to participate each year. The Ohio 4-H Conference is designed to equip participants with resources, information, and skills to meet the ever-changing needs of youth. Attendees have the opportunity to receive training in more than 125 different topics such as career exploration, risk management, camping, leadership, cake decorating, dancing, animal sciences, and much more.
In addition to the educational sessions, the day features the Bob Evans Farms 4-H Volunteer Recognition Luncheon for the adults highlighting the extraordinary accomplishments of volunteers. The teens (age 13 and older) have a luncheon that recognizes their peers and often features a keynote speaker. Fairfield County youth Natalyn Landis and Emma Newell are being added to the Teen Hall of Fame! Some advisors are being honored as well…please consider attending session 704 to celebrate with them.
Need some 4-H bling? We have that too! Our Marketplace features a variety of 4-H items, including apparel, to purchase. Representatives are available to speak to you about fundraising opportunities for 4-H clubs, project books, and more.

Ohio Pork Producer – Communications Intern
The Ohio Pork Council is seeking a talented communications intern for the summer! The OPC intern will be responsible for assisting in communication with members and the public by writing press releases, developing graphics and using social media. the intern is expected to assist with the Ohio State Fair, serving as the Pork Food Stand Assistant Manager, and support producer education programs to help increase member participation and awareness of Pork Checkoff programs. As part of the internship program, the student will attend a national intern-training seminar that is held in conjunction with the World Pork Expo. Interns will receive compensation of up to $4,000 in the form of bi-weekly salary of scholarship. Ohio Beef Council – Summer Internship
The Ohio Beef Council is seeking applicants for its summer internship.The full-time public relations internship will provide the successful candidate with excellent experience in communications and promotions through the coordination of numerous events and activities. The successful candidate will help with the planning, coordination and execution of all displays during the Ohio State Fair; assist with the Young Cattlemen’s Conference and assist with other events and promotions. The internship will begin in mid-May and last until mid-August with flexibility based on course schedule. Application deadline is February 15th, 2017. Do you know of anyone interested in applying?
