The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is currently accepting applications for General Chemistry TA positions for Spring 2024. A TA position provides the opportunity to improve your knowledge, gain teaching experience, and help students.

In order to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Completed General Chemistry Sequence (1206/1208/1220; 1210/1220; 1610/1620; or 1910H/1920H) with an A or A- (preferred)
  • Cumulative GPA > 3.2
  • Enrolled in classes during Autumn 2024*
  • No other paid monthly student appointment during 2024 (this includes paid research)

Appointment details are as follows:

  • Salary: $13/hour
  • Hours: 10-12/week
  • Responsibilities: teach one 3-hour lab; grade assignments and prepare for teaching responsibilities; 1 office hour/week; proctor all exams; attend weekly staff meeting. (Note: Undergraduate students teaching General Chemistry for the first time on OSU-Columbus campus will be assigned to teach lab)

Training will take place Monday, August 12th – Monday, August 19th during business hours. Conflicts with training, including TAs who must live on campus, should be stated in the application, and described in detail if possible.

DOE Office of Science: Autumn 2024 Internships

Applications are currently being accepted for the Fall 2024 term of the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program offered by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC). The application deadline is Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. ET. 

Two workshops are planned to provide strategies for submitting a compliant application and to learn about the internship experience from the voices of SULI alumni.

Through SULI, undergraduate students and recent graduates discover science and technology careers at the DOE national laboratories and gain the experience needed to transition from intern to employment. Interns work directly with national laboratory scientists and engineers, assisting them on research or technology projects that support the DOE mission.

SULI is open to full-time students attending 4-year institutions and community colleges or recent graduates within two years of receiving their bachelor’s degree. The program is stipend-based and offered three times annually in Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

Career Accelerator Fund

The Career Accelerator Fund (CAF) provides financial support for College of Arts and Sciences students participating in unpaid, minimally paid, or underpaid internships, undergraduate research, or experiential learning opportunities. You can learn more on the CAF website.

The application deadline for Summer 2024 opportunities is March 2, 2024. The application is found on Scholarship Universe. This is a university-wide platform and resource designed to aid in the search for available funding, awards, and scholarships.

OSUCCC Summer Research Opportunity

Application Deadline: February 11, 2024

CREATES-Undergrad is a paid fellowship program for Ohio State University undergraduate students interested in cancer research. Selected participants will conduct work within The Ohio State University James Comprehensive Cancer Center and the College of Pharmacy.

The program dates are May 20, 2024 thru July 28, 2024. It includes a $15.78/hr stipend and student mentorship by faculty and staff.

Job Opening: Chemist at US FDA Forensic Chemistry Center

The U.S. FDA National Forensic Chemistry Center is accepting applications for the position of GS-1320-07 Chemist. These are onsite, non-remote positions located at the Cincinnati, OH location. These positions are for recent graduates OR students who are expected to graduate by June 30, 2024. These positions have a promotion potential to GS-12, which places the salary range between $51,068.00 and $117,759.41.

MICHR Summer Research Program

Program Information:

  • 10-week full-time immersion program: May 28 – August 2, 2024
  • Engage in clinical, translational science, & health disparities research
  • Work with a mentor on an ongoing, funded research project
  • Orientation and required training in the protection of human subjects and the responsible conduct of research
  • Meet with community members who partner with academics in research
  • Classroom work and team projects
  • Participating students will be hired as temporary U-M employees and paid a salary

Eligibility:

  • Graduating college seniors, master’s degree students, and health professions degree students
  • Students enrolled in any health-related programs (e.g. biomedical engineering, dentistry, kinesiology, medicine, nursing, public health, social work, etc)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

Work for CBC: Demo Lab Assistant

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is currently accepting applications for Lab Assistants in the Demonstrations Laboratory for Spring 2024! Lab Assistant positions provide students with the opportunity to work in an active laboratory space, connect with students on a similar path, and learn valuable customer service skills applicable to many careers. Students may have the opportunity to take on a leadership role.

In order to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Completed Chem 1210 & 1220. Some organic knowledge is helpful.
  • Cumulative GPA > 3.0
  • Enrolled in classes during Spring 2024
  • No other paid monthly student appointments during Spring 2024 (this includes paid research). Biweekly appointments are acceptable.

Appointment details are as follows:

  • Hours: 12-28/week
  • Typical Responsibilities: preparation and distribution of reagents, distribution and maintenance of lab equipment, completion of weekly safety checks, etc.

Pay Structure:

  • First year of employment: $12.00/hour
  • Second year of employment: $12.50/hour
  • Third year of employment: $13.00/hour

Job Opening: Biochem Research Technician at Virginia Tech

A full-time research technician is sought to support multiple projects in the labs of Dr. Pearl Chiu and Dr. Brooks Casas at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion in Roanoke, Virginia, is currently seeking a new full-time research technician. The Lab Manager contacted us in hopes of applications from Ohio State students.

The labs are currently engaged in advanced quantitative methods to conduct leading-edge research on the role of neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine) in the human brain to understand human cognitive function and dysfunction.

Projects in the labs are highly interdisciplinary and combine methods from experimental and clinical psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics with functional neuroimaging and electrochemistry to investigate decision-making in healthy and clinical populations. The research technician will be responsible for in-vitro data collection to inform in-vivo models of human neurochemistry. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in graduate school in biomedical science or neuroscience.

Required qualifications include basic lab experience, including dilutions, weighing chemicals, and understanding of proper chemical handling. Preferred qualifications include a B.S. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field, and interest in advancing human neuroscience.
