Some of the duties of this job will include:

  • Conducts specialized tests and evaluations of materials and packaging samples in support of departmental activities including, but not limited to the following:
    • Material thickness/yield/basis weight
    • Surface energy, Coefficient of Friction
    • Tensile tests (seal strength, elongation, tensile strength, yield strength)
    • Tear resistance, impact/puncture strength
    • Heat seal and other package strength characterizations
    • Optical Microsopy
    • Material chemical characterization (FTIR)
    • Thermal analysis (DSC)
    • Barrier testing (WVTR, OTR), film noise characterization
  •  Maintains database of raw materials linked to product chemical composition

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with a curriculum that included chemistry and laboratory coursework
  • Up to five years of experience in a manufacturing setting
  • Experience in Infrared Spectroscopy highly preferred
  • Must have organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Must possess good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with employees
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Proficient in Excel and Word
  • Willingness to work as team member or independently

ACS Career Development and Mentorship Event

ACS-Columbus has been working with the College of Arts and Sciences to create a mentorship and career advancement program for students in chemistry fields around Columbus. Each event will focus on a specific topic for career advancement and will provide and opportunity for students to connect with members of ACS Columbus.

The first event will be held on a Saturday (Time and Date TBA) this February and will focus on ‘Finding Your Path.’ It will explore the differences in a career in academics, industry, government, or working independently. This is a great opportunity to meet professionals currently working in the field and to network with those in the field. The goal is to make this event beneficial to students in every stage of their career planning process.

The Inside Scoop: Frozen Yogurt With Pharmacy Professionals

This relaxed frozen yogurt social is the perfect environment to interact with and gain insight from recruiters, professionals, and alumni in a speed-dating fashion.

ACS Career Workshop

The American Chemical Society is hosting a chemistry career-related workshop titled “Finding Your Path” on Saturday, February 18th from 10:30am-2:00pm in CBEC 130.

This is a wonderful opportunity to network, as well as learn about what it is like to work in a chemistry field!

The event will host a speaker from the American Chemical Society and many members from the American Chemical Society-Columbus Section. During the workshop, you will learn about the four sectors of chemistry employment and which best aligns to your values and strengths. You will also learn about planning your next steps to obtaining your ideal position, and effective networking and job searching.

A boxed lunch will be provided during the workshop. There will also be opportunities to win chemistry related prizes.

The event is free to all Chemistry students from the Columbus, Ohio area. Parking will be validated for students outside of OSU campus.

Those who plan to attend must RSVP by February 11th on the Columbus ACS website.

Networking For Scientists

The Internship program is titled ODA (Ohio Department of Agriculture) University. It is both an internship and a small scholarship to their college. The application deadline for this year has passed, but you can to apply for the internship 2017.  There are more details to follow on the 2017 internships.  This is an excellent chance to learn more and get real life experience.

Stepping Stones: “Sole” Searching a Career in Podiatric Medicine

Have you ever considered a career in Podiatric Medicine? The podiatric physician is a health professional who is involved with the examination, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders by physical, medical and surgical means. Due to the rise in demand for doctors who specialize in this area, podiatry is ranked as the 12th highest paying job in the United States! Experts expect opportunities in the field of podiatry to rise 14%,  and this area of medicine offers a wide range of work environments, from fast paced emergency room atmospheres to privately owned offices.

Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine still has seats available for the Class of 2020. They will continue to accept applications through June 30, 2016 through the AACPM website. In addition, interviews of qualified applicants will continue into July.
