July 15 Project Judging Results

The results from the July 15 4-H Project Judging are now posted!

State Fair Orientation for Qualifiers will be Sunday, July 25 at 1:30 at the Washington County Junior Fair Building. Qualifiers are required to attend State Fair orientation, receive State Fair information, tickets and have a photo taken on Sunday, July 25 at 1:30. If a qualifier cannot attend state fair, please call the Extension Office ASAP so the alternate can be notified and given the opportunity to compete at State Fair. The 2021 OSF will only be a judging event (no rides, no concessions, etc) where the member and one adult will be allowed in the judging building. There will not be an awards presentation at the end of each day.

Saying “Thank You” is Important

Have you had a great 4-H experience this year, or maybe you were able  to put some money in to your college fund after the livestock sales.  Now is a great time to say thank you to our local businesses, volunteers, and project helpers.  A great way to say thanks is to write a quick thank you note and drop it in the mail or even stop by the business personally to offer a thank you.  Saying Thank you is easy and lets other’s know you appreciate their support.  Who will you thank this year??

New 2021 Family Guide

The new family guide is now posted to the Ohio 4-H page.  Plan for your 2021 special interest and livestock projects today.  Family guides will be mailed to each family this year who is a current member.  New members will be able to pick up a family guide at OSU Extension in Washington County or by contacting your 4-H Club Advisor.  Here is a sneak peek for you to get a jump start….

Tips for Members – Preparing for 2020 Project Judging

2020 4-H Project Judging Guidelines (what to bring, etc)

Overview & Timeline:

  • All Special Interest Projects will be judged at the club level by club advisors for 2020. There will not be a county-wide event on July 16
  • Face-to-Face judging interviews are preferred. However, if necessary advisors could interview and judge a member virtually. Virtual interviews must have at least 3 people present; advisor, 4-H member, and a third person. Virtual interview will also need to include video or photos of the project book.
  • If needed OSU Extension can schedule judging appointments for special circumstances or members with Winning Plans
  • There will NOT be county-wide Make-up Project Judging (August 3) offered for 2020
  • July 31 – Advisors return Project Judging Completion Rosters to OSU Extension

Special Interest Project (Still Project) Judging Announcement

We are faced this year with many challenges because of COVID-19. OSU Extension and the 4-H Advisory Committee have developed a plan to implement a revised strategy for 2020 Special Interest Project Judging.

Washington County 4-H Special Interest Judging Plans

  • All Special Interest Projects will be judged at the club level by club advisors for 2020. There will not be a county-wide event on July 16
  • There will NOT be county-wide Make-up Project Judging (August 3) offered for 2020
  • All members that complete Special Interest Project Judging will receive one $6 Voucher from the 4-H Advisory Committee. The voucher can be redeemed at OSU Extension toward the purchase of 4-H Project Books or applied toward 4-H Camp Registration. One voucher per member.

County Timeline for Special Interest Judging

  • June 24 – OSU Extension will mail judging packets to advisors
  • July 1 – OSU Extension will post a video for advisor training about club level project judging
  • July 1 – OSU Extension will post a video for members about club level project judging
  • July 31 – Advisors return Project Judging Completion Rosters due to OSU Extension
  • August-Sept – Advisors will receive ribbons for members to exhibit in fair booths

Announcement About Ohio State Fair and Plans for Ohio 4-H Project Showcase

Due to COVID-19 and in alignment with the cancellation of the Ohio State Fair, there will be no 4-H state fair project judging this year. However, we know how important it is to recognize 4-H members for the time and effort in completing their projects. While we are still working on the details, we are excited to announce there will be an Ohio 4-H Project Showcase. All members will be invited to submit a photo of themselves with their 4-H project. These photos will be added to a gallery page on the state 4-H website and we’re working on plans to highlight members in additional ways. We’ll share the information about posting photos by June 15.

Ohio State Fair Cancelled for 2020

With today’s announcement to cancel the 2020 Ohio State Fair, please keep in mind that in the coming weeks we will be sharing more information about a virtual format for State Level 4-H Special Interest Project judging. Bruce Zimmer

Today, the Ohio Expositions Commission announced that it will cancel the 2020 Ohio State Fair, originally scheduled for July 29 – August 9 in Columbus. Members of the Commission expressed concern for public health, as well as the financial feasibility of hosting a socially distant fair that would adhere to social distancing protocols and its impact on the long-term viability of the Ohio State Fair.

“After careful thought and deliberation, we have decided to cancel the Ohio State Fair. Knowing how easily the virus spreads in large groups, we believe it is the safest path forward for the health and safety of all Ohioans.” said Andy Doehrel, chair of the Ohio Expositions Commission. “The financial ramifications of hosting a reduced-capacity Fair would be too great, and we need to protect the great Ohio State Fair for future generations.”

“Our first priority is the safety of the hundreds of thousands of people involved in the Ohio State Fair each year. While this is a difficult decision, we feel it is necessary to protect the fairgoers, exhibitors, volunteers, vendors, partners, performers, concessionaires, youth leaders, employees and sponsors,” said Virgil Strickler, general manager of the Ohio Expo Center & State Fair. “I look forward to seeing my fellow Ohioans at the 2021 Ohio State Fair, when it is safer for us to enjoy our favorite traditions together.”

Last year, 934,925 people attended the Ohio State Fair during its 12-day run. These attendees came from each of Ohio’s 88 counties, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, as well as Canada and Mexico.

The Ohio Expositions Commission is focused on developing a strategy to responsibly reopen its year-round facilities when appropriate, and to welcome guests back for the 2021 Ohio State Fair, scheduled for July 28 through August 8 of next year.
