Ohio 4-H Shooting Education Camps Seeking Camp Counselors

The Ohio 4-H Shooting Education Camps are seeking camp counselors! We have two different opportunities for current 4-H’ers and even alumni.

The basics:

Applications are due through the online system by March 15th: https://go.osu.edu/shootingsportscounselor

The position description and another letter with information is provided in the application. You can also find the link to the application on the Ohio 4-H Shooting Education Camp page: https://ohio4h.org/families/members/events-opportunties/shooting-sports/4-h-shooting-ed-camp

Dates: Junior Camp – June 27th-30th (campers arrive the 28th; staff arrive late afternoon of the 27th)

Senior camp: — July 13th-19th (campers arrive the 14th, staff arrive the later afternoon of the 13th)

The details:

TEENS: must be at least 14 years old as of January 1st, 2019 to counsel at Junior Shooting Education Camp. This is a great opportunity for youth in your county who are counselors and just want more time at camp. NO shooting sports experience required! This is also a great opportunity for those youth who are involved in shooting sports to give back to younger members. We have had several of our teens serve in this role and it gets kids who may never think about being a county camp counselor an opportunity to take on a leadership role in a project area they are invested in.

ALUMNI: Senior Education Camp needs counselors who are 18+ this is a great opportunity for those last year counselors and a way to draw in young alumni into volunteer roles. Any 4-H alumni will need to go through the process to become an approved screened volunteer in your county, and you will be asked for a reference/recommendation as part of the selection process. In the event that we do not have enough counselors who are 18+ we will evaluate options.

TRAINING: Those youth who are shooting sports teens but not county counselors will need to work with their respective county 4-H professionals to complete the training in the county. The past three years we have offered training at the spring instructor workshop, but have not had enough interest. I appreciate your help and support in working with these teens to provide them the necessary training.

All applicants will need to fill out the online application and complete a phone or zoom interview with  Christy Clary.

43rd Annual Ohio Dorset Sale

Plans for the 43rd annual Ohio Dorset Sale have been set for March 15 and 16 at the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, Ohio. Billed as “the first, the biggest, the best” Dorset sale, it will feature both Horned and Polled Dorsets. Dorsets from South Dakota to Connecticut have been entered.

Established in 1977, the Ohio Dorset Sale has been a barometer used to gauge how the registered sheep industry is doing in the New Year. Entered in the sale are 100 head of Polled Dorsets and 30 head of Horned Dorsets.

“The nation’s finest Dorset genetics from ten different states have been consigned to this year’s sale,” said sale manager Greg Deakin, Cuba, Ill. “The sale’s history is rich, dating back to 1977. More national breed champion rams and ewes have sold through the Ohio Dorset Sale than any other sale.”

Both Horned and Polled Dorset rams and ewes will be offered consisting of classes for yearlings, fall and winter lambs. Serving as judge is Alex Wolf from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and sale auctioneers are Gary Saylor and Danny Westlake, both from Ohio. The Ohio Dorset Association is sponsoring the sale and consignment viewing may be seen at www.bannersheepmagazine.com.

Sale questions may be directed to sale manager Greg Deakin, 309-785-5058.
