Analytical Technician

Owens Corning Granville S&T has an opening for a technician level analyst to work in The Corporate Analytical Laboratory.  This position is in a corporate lab that services the technical needs of all of OC’s business units around the globe.  The position includes routine and non-routine sample preparation along with completing qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on a wide range of materials.  This will include the characterization of various raw materials used to make the products as well as the finished product itself.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 4 year college degree in a hard science, B.S. in Chemistry or B.S. in Materials/Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • experience working in a chemical laboratory with various analytical or QC instrumentation

CBC Faculty Spotlight: Associate Professor and CBC Alum, Zac Schultz ’00

As an OSU Chemistry and Biochemistry alumnus, Associate Professor Zac Schultz ‘00 was excited to bring his research program to CBC, and to indulge in the Columbus community, which has changed immensely since his time as a student, he stated. “Columbus today is a dynamic and vibrant metropolitan area that my family and I look forward to living and working in.” Dr. Schultz said.

As an undergraduate at OSU, Zac wanted to become a Biochemist, until a professor convinced him to jump ships; he’s stuck with Chemistry ever since. “I really enjoy understanding how things work and chemistry lets me explore this at a molecular level, which allows me to explore many different applications and areas,” Zac explained. His current research looks to harness advancements in lasers and nanomaterials to develop disease diagnostic technology, catalysts, and build on science that will enable even more developments. Nanomaterials developed in his lab even have the potential utility for converting carbon dioxide into fuels. “The possibility that our research may prevent or help treat diseases, such as cancer, or help solve environmental and energy challenges is really motivating. At the same time, working with students and training the next generation of scientists in my laboratory is equally rewarding. I see my research as way to impact the future.”

Undergraduate Research Scholarship

Deadline: Monday, September 17th 

The Undergraduate Research Scholarship and the International Research Grant for Undergraduates in the Arts and Sciences are scholarships ranging from $500 to $6,000. The Honors Committee does not require that applicants be members of the Arts and Sciences Honors Program; however, the committee generally gives preference to students who are candidates for graduation with research distinction or with honors research distinction, because they have demonstrated the sort of academic ability and commitment which indicates the likelihood of success in completing a major research project. D. E. Shaw Research

The D. E. Shaw Research, a computational biochemistry group based in Manhattan, will be hosting a talk at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, in room 304 of the Journalism Building.  During the talk, they will present an overview of their work and answer any questions students may have about the lab. It is an interdisciplinary group and so students of all degree levels and postdocs from a variety of fields are invited to attend.

D. E. Shaw Research is an independent research laboratory that conducts scientific research and technological development in the field of computational biochemistry.  They have designed and developed multiple generations of Anton, a massively parallel supercomputer that executes MD simulations orders of magnitude faster than was previously possible.  Anton has now simulated the behavior of a number of proteins for periods as long as several milliseconds, revealing biologically and pharmaceutically relevant aspects of protein dynamics.
 
Members of the group include computational chemists and biologists, computer scientists and applied mathematicians, and computer architects and engineers of all seniority levels, working collaboratively within a tightly coupled interdisciplinary research environment under the leadership of chief scientist Dr. David E. Shaw.

Apply to be a General Chemistry TA in Autumn 2018!

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry hires over 50 outstanding undergraduates per semester to teach our General Chemistry courses. If you’d like to improve your content knowledge at your job, help students through problems, and get teaching experience, TAing could be for you!

Qualifications:

  • Completed General Chemistry Sequence (1210/1220; 1610/1620; or 1910H/1920H) with an A or A- (preferred)
  • Accumulative GPA > 3.6
  • Taking classes during Autumn 2018
  • No other paid student appointment during Autumn 2018 [this includes paid research]

Appointment Details:

  • Salary: $12/hour
  • Hours: 10-12 per week
  • Responsibilities: Teach 1-3 hour lab; Promptly grade assignments and prepare for teaching responsibilities; 1 weekly office hour; proctor all exams; attend weekly staff meetings and beginning of the year training beginning Monday, August 13th. Conflicts with training should be stated on your application and described in detail if possible.

TA Opportunities At OSU

If you are interested in becoming a TA  for Autumn 2018? Two departments here at OSU are currently hiring!

The Math Department relies on students to staff the TA sections of pre-calculus and algebra courses. Undergrad Math TAs currently receive a stipend of at least $4920 per semester for approximately 20 hours of work per week. Duties include teaching recitations, grading, holding office hours, and tutoring.

If you have:

1) Excellent communication skills,

2) An interest in teaching,

3) At least one post-calculus math course, and

4) Undergraduate student status at OSU

You are  eligible to apply for a teaching associateship in Math that begins Autumn Semester, 2018.

Interested students can pick up applications from the Math Tower receptionist or can contact John Lewis (300 Math Tower or lewis.361@osu.edu) for more information.
