Tri-Institutional Mentorship Initiative (TIMI)

The Tri-I Mentorship Initiative (TIMI) is a virtual mentorship program led by the Tri-Institutional Outreach Committee, a group of students from Weill Cornell Medicine, Sloan Kettering, and Rockefeller University. Prospective graduate students will be paired with an individual graduate student mentor to help them navigate the graduate school application process.

The committee is actively seeking mentees. Eligible students are prospective PhD program applicants interested in applying to graduate school this year and either currently hold or will receive a Bachelor’s degree by Spring 2025. PhD programs of interest should be in a biomedical-related field.

Apply for the TIMI Mentorship before is August 7, 2024. 

The program kickoff meeting is on August 21. Mentees will meet with their mentors at least three times between September and November. All programming is held virtually.

On-Campus Job Opportunity: Part-Time Lab Technician

CBC Professor, Dr. Anne Co, is seeking a current Senior student to join her team as a Part-Time Chemistry Laboratory Technician.

The pay rate is $15 per hour. The selected applicant can expect to work 10-15 hours per week (hours are flexible and negotiable.)

Qualifications

  • Senior student working towards a Bachelors or Associates Degree in Science, preferably in Chemistry
  • Organization skill is very important for this project
  • Must be comfortable working as part of a team
  • Must be comfortable working with chemicals

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and handle dilute 4% ammonium bifloride bath
  • Clean quartz tube in 4% ammonium bifloride bath
  • Assemble the quartz tube in
  • Conduct chemical synthesis following standard procedures.
  • Collect and test samples
  • Monitor processes to ensure they are operating correctly and consistently
  • Document all results neatly and precisely
  • Label and organize samples

SLDS Hiring Student Lab Assistants

OSU Student Life Disability Services (SLDS) is currently accepting applications for Lab Assistants.

Lab Assistants collaborate with students with disabilities in a lab or classroom setting to complete physically inaccessible aspects of their coursework. For example: pouring chemistry lab solutions, reading measurements, carrying lab equipment, and/or providing verbal descriptions of visual information.

Applicants must be enrolled The Ohio Student University students with previous experience in a lab setting. Chemistry lab experience is strongly desired.

The starting pay rate is $14 per hour.

UK Master’s in Forensic Toxicology & Analytical Genetics

The University of Kentucky is accepting applications for its Master’s in Forensics Toxicology & Analytical Genetics. The program has two areas of concentration: Forensic Toxicology/Chemistry and Forensic/Analytical Genetics.

Through the common core curriculum, students in both concentrations will graduate with a skill set in advanced forensic toxicology, advanced analytical genetics, writing, communication, professionalism, ethics, legal perspectives and workplace-specific skills. The curriculum contains two internships which provide students with hands-on experiences necessary to be competitive in the job market upon exiting the program. This is a two-year program.

Tuition for this program is assessed at a special rate for all students (in- and out-of-state), which represents significant savings for out-of-state students. Graduates will be competitive for workforce deployment in the areas of: drug testing and analysis, DNA/genetic testing and analysis, forensic governmental divisions, hospital clinical labs, cancer genetics, genealogy, research and developmental laboratories, and crime laboratories.

The fall 2024 application deadline is July 26, 2024. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. There is no GRE requirement.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) Virtual Office Hours for Student Summer Researchers

Join the Virtual Office Hours for Student Summer Researchers to gain an understanding of the eligibility requirements, application process, and review criteria for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP).

Student Opportunities at Air Force Research Laboratory

Contacts at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has provided CBC with a flyer describing opportunities for undergraduates (and recent undergraduates) to get funding to work at or with AFRL. The flyer is linked here: AFRL Opportunities

The programs vary substantially: some are almost entirely managed externally, and some allow AFRL researchers to advocate heavily for specific collaborations. Each program has various requirements which are described in in detail with the links.

Job Opportunity: Forensic Chemist I

The Kentucky State Police Eastern Laboratory Branch is hiring for the position of Forensic Chemist I. The laboratory is located in Ashland, KY. This position will be trained in drug chemistry and toxicology (blood alcohols).

The Forensic Chemist Training Program lasts approximately one year and includes pertinent reading assignments, practical examinations on known specimens, a mock trial for testimony, and a competency test for each discipline for which an analyst works cases. Upon successful completion of the training program, the newly trained analyst will generally process casework under the direction of experienced analysts for a set period of time.

This position may be of interest to recent graduates. It requires a minimum of BS in Chemistry or BS in Forensic Science with an emphasis in chemistry. The position is open for applications until July 4, 2024.
