Hey 4-H Teens – Are You Interested in Traveling to Another State?

WASHINGTON COUNTY INTERSTATE EXCHANGE CLUB wants you to join them for their next adventure!

If you will be 13 by June 1st or older and are a member in good standing of another Washington County 4H Club, we would love to have you join us.  This is a 2 year adventure.  We travel as a group to the selected state for 5-7 days in the first part of summer, then host the other state the following summer, or vice versa.  We explore and share our 4H experience in our county and state when we host.

Past exchanges have included travel to Montana, Kansas, Wisconsin, Wyoming, North Carolina, and Colorado.   Lifelong friendships have become a common result of this club.

Interstate Exchange Club Hosts Colorado Group

The Washington County Interstate Exchange Club hosting a group from Colorado in early June. Here is a recap of their adventures. If you are interested in joining the Interstate Club, contact Ellie Tullius at tulliuse@gmail.com. The club will be organizing soon to begin planning their 2026 adventure!!

Did you know that the Washington County Interstate Exchange 4H Club was formed in 2013 and has traveled to Montana, Wisconsin, Kansas, North Carolina, and Colorado.  If you are at least 13 and would like to expand your 4-H career, we would love to have you!  Contact Advisor Ellie Tullius, 740-434-3064 or Bruce at the Extension Office.  We just finished hosting the Colorado group and are now looking to find our next exchange state.  Members need to join by Oct. 1st.

Day 1

  • The statue of Thomas Edison in Statuary Hall, U.S. Capitol Building, Washington, D.C. was made in Zanesville, OH by Alan Cottrill and you can visit his museum.
  • Your group can have Tom”s Ice Cream Bowl serve you in the historic house next door with prior arrangements.
  • John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth and when he did, residents in his home town of New Concord, OH thought he had bombed them when they heard the sonic boom.  He served in the military, as a US Senator, and is the oldest person to go to space.
  • Annie Glenn, John’s wife, had a severe stutter resulting in others thinking she was mute due to her limiting who she spoke to.  John often spoke for her.  At age 53, she found a doctor at the Communications Research Institute in Roanoke, VA and conquered her stutter after 3 weeks of intensive therapy.
  • There is a museum at their home place in New Concord, OH.
  • New friends from across the US are made through the Exchange 4H Club.

Day 2

  • Jack Pine is a glassblower known for his unique, hand-blown pumpkins and other creations, particularly inspired by the natural forms of the Hocking Hills region of Ohio.
  • Jack Pine Studio in Hocking Hills offers individual sessions and you can pull or blow glass resulting in a pulled flower or a blown pumpkin.
  • Old Man’s Cave is named after Richard Rowe, a hermit who lived in the cave during the early 1800’s. It is part of Hocking Hills State Park which offers several hiking trails to the caves and is known for it’s stunning geological formations carved from Blackhand sandstone.
  • Hocking Hills offers zip lining.  With the encouragement and support of your new friends made in thru the exchange 4H club, you can overcome many fears.
  • Logan, OH is home of the Washboard Festival.

Day 3

  • The Wilds, a conservation center in Ohio, transformed  a reclaimed surface-mined area into a 10,000 acre haven for endangered and threatened species.  They are home to over 500 animals representing 28 rare and endangered species.
  • Family days during the exchange are designed to share your family with your new friends.

Day 4

  • There is a Multicultural Geneological Center in Chesterhill Ohio.  They are home of the wall in which freedom seekers hid against and they offer a wealth of information regarding the Underground Railroad, and offer an escape room in which you must think like an escaping slave to solve and escape.
  • Chesterhill is home of the Kincaid Cave, a cave the freedom seekers hid out in.
  • Of course some of you know Triple Nickle Dinner offers great food and desserts.
  • There is a growing Amish community in Chesterhill and offer a produce auction 2 times a week in the summer.
  • Marlow Fisheries is located in Little Hocking, Ohio and will complete a tour for you.
  • There is a Mortuary Museum located in Marietta.  Bill Peoples has a wonderful collection of  the development of the coffin, including a 1800″s Ice Box Coffin; the development of the hearse, including the hearse used in the movie Get Low; the development of the embalming process; and much more.  The term “basket case” originated from people being buried in baskets.
  • Hartline Dairy was founded in 1948 and founded by Richard and Ruth Hartline.  Now their 3 sons, Bob, Gale, and John own and operate the dairy.  They milk about 250 cows 3 times a day.

Day 5

  • Of course you know that Marietta is a historical town, but let me share that a trip on the Trolly will provide you much more history regarding the development of the town.   The Trolly currently has limited hours, however, your group can rent it and a tour guide for a private tour.
  • Historical roadside markers are made in Marietta, Ohio.  in 1927, E.M. Hawes founded his factory, naming it Sewah Studios, his name in reverse.  Today it is owned by the Brad Smith family, you may know his daughter, McKenzie Smith, through her participation in 4H.  You can find these historical markers throughout the United States and in our countries as well.  They are more than happy to arrange a tour to see the process of making the markers.
  • In 1749, the 1st Mass was offered to troops and the Native Americans at the confluence of the Muskingum and the Ohio Rivers.  this began the development of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, now  The Basilica of St. Mary of The Assumption.
  • The Washington County Sheriff’s Dept. will complete a drone demonstration.  Throughout this presentation they will provide you the steps to become a drone pilot, as well as the laws of flying a drone.

Day 6

  • Historic Fort Steuben was built in 1786 by the First American Regiment for the protection of surveyors.  Tours can be taken of this historic fort.
  • Washington County OH Natural Gas and Oil facts for 2023:  2,174,736 thousand FT3 of natural gas and 53,838 barrels of oil were produced.  There are 3,068 producing wells and 3,773 wells drilled.  You can visit a live well pad and learn the drilling process with prior arrangements.
  • St. Clairsville, Ohio has a newly established TILT Studio, a place to play laser tag, putt putt golf, bowling, axe throwing, horse racing, roller coaster ride, and many arcade games.

Day 7

  • Bob Evans Farms was founded in 1948 in Rio Grande.  How you say Rio Grande helps the home people know if you are a trespasser or native to the area.  Bob Evans had a friendship with “The Colonel,” of Kentucky Fried Chicken.  There are now approximately 425 Bob Evans locations in the US, with a large concentration in Ohio.  Ask for a history when you dine in with them.
