It’s time to start planning for the 4-H Week Promotional Contests. Our theme is: “4-H Life Skills Under Construction”

Poster Contest

Posters should be delivered to the Extension Office by March 1. Posters should be a full-sheet of poster board and promote 4-H in Washington County.  The posters may be used by the Extension Office throughout the 2021 year for promotion. Clubs are not obligated to use the county theme. Participating clubs will receive a recognition certificate. Three winners will be awarded a prize from the Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee! Social Media Post Contest

Static posts or video posts must be created by 4-H members and posts can be created using software (i.e. Canva, TikTok). Posts should promote 4-H, your 4-H club, how to join, and contact information. Clubs are not obligated to use the county theme. Participating clubs will receive a recognition certificate. Two winners will be awarded a prize from the Washington County 4-H Advisory Committee! One for each category. See score sheet for complete details. Must email copy of post by Monday, March 6 to Sally Shaw at shaw.524@osu.edu for the purpose of judging.

Project Highlight of the Week: Woodworking

This week are exploring Woodworking for our projects of the week!

Measuring Up: Level I – Get started in woodworking by selecting a project helper and setting up a safe place to work. Covers ear and eye protection and these tools: a ruler or tape measure, a square, saws, an electric drill, clamps, a screwdriver, a hammer, and sand paper. Build and finish a project of your choice.

Making the Cut, Level 2 – Select a wood project that shows off your new skills with a T-level, a miter box, a wood chisel, a hand jig saw, a scroll saw, a staple gun, and a power sander. Learn more about the different species of wood.

Nailing it Together, Level 3 – Youth practice measuring angles, cutting dado and rabbet joints; using a circular saw, a table saw and a radial arm saw; smoothing lumber with a hand planer; and sanding and staining wood.

Finishing Up, Level 4 – Challenge yourself to learn hand-cut dovetail, mortise and tenon joints. Use a power router, various planers, and a power jointer to create a project of your choice. Learn about veneer, common adhesives, stripping, and repairing.

The 4-H Open House is a fun-filled evening of games, prizes, activities, small animals,    4-H membership Information (grades K-12) and camp fundraising opportunities. Project Highlight of the Week: Fishing & Trapping

This week are explore fishing and trapping for our projects of the week!

Outdoor Adventurer: Beginning Fishing – Here’s a great way to spend your spring and summer. Learn some fish basics and how to catch them. Then concentrate on filling the log book with all your fishing trips.

Outdoor Adventurer: Intermediate Fishing – Learn more about the outdoor sport you love with activities that explore how to find fish and how to get them to bite. Includes cleaning. Completing the Outdoor Adventurer: Beginning Fishing project first is highly recommended.

Trapping Muskrats in Ohio – In this project, learn about the biology and behavior of muskrats and how to ethically and humanely trap muskrats.

Bull’s Eye Shooting Sports Spring Session

Advance Registration:

  • Youth must be 9 years old as of January 1, 2023 and not older than 19 by December 31, 2023
  • Signup Genius, an online software tool, is used for registration.
  • The link to access the signup will be posted on the county’s 4-H Blog at: https://u.osu.edu/washington4h/

 Disciplines:

  • Members will participate in one discipline
  • Beginning Rifle, maximum of 12
  • Archery (beginning, intermediate, advanced): all skill levels shoot together, maximum of 15 in class
  • Shotgun: all skill levels shoot together, maximum of 15 in class. Shotguns have a recoil and weigh between 6-8 lbs. We use both low recoil shotguns and ammunition. But recoil is still present. Participants are expected to be able stand, hold and swing the shotgun by themselves. We will be using 20 gauge shotguns. Please contact Brian Baker for further details 740-350-8155
  • Living History, maximum of 10

Ohio CARTEENS 4-H Safety Education Virtual SPIN Club

The Ohio 4-H CARTEENS program is hosting a virtual SPIN club for all those interested in learning about CARTEENS clubs and safety education for drivers and passengers in the state of Ohio.  The virtual sessions will be held once a month at 5:30PM.  There is no cost to members, just join the zoom link and be ready to learn about hands on activities to implement in your county.  Please see the attached flyer for dates and topics.  Members attending at least 6 sessions will be awarded a goody bag of supplies.  For more information please call our office 740.376.7431.

Ohio Youth Poultry Clinic – March 18

The Youth Poultry Clinic is open to all youth (and adults) interested in learning more about poultry.

WHEN: March 18

WHERE: OSU ATI, Wooster, OH

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 1

COST: $20.00 per youth and $25.00 per adult.

Everyone MUST register to eat refreshments and/or lunch, whether or not attending sessions.

Topics include: Poultry Nutrition, Broiler Evaluation, Poultry Necropsy – Comparative Anatomy, Mortality Disposal, Biosecurity/HPAI, Poultry Carcass Cut-up, Q & A Corner.

Poultry Quality Assurance will be offered after lunch for Ohio youth needing Youth Quality Assurance certification for 2023.

Project Highlight of the Week: Photography

We have three photography projects to help youth learn the art and skill of take pictures:

Photography Basics, Book 1 – Activities in this advanced study of photography build on the four main areas from Books 1 and 2 (equipment, lighting, composition, and skill building). Topics covered include smartphone exposure tips, low light challenges, and studio portraits. Access to a camera (phone or DSLR) is essential.

Next Level Photography, Book 2 – Activities in this intermediate study of photography build on the four main areas from Level 1 (equipment, lighting, composition, and skill building) and include topics such as the rule of thirds, selecting a lens, and panorama. Access to a camera (phone or DSLR) is essential.

Mastering Photography, Book 3 – Activities in this advanced study of photography build on the four main areas from Books 1 and 2 (equipment, lighting, composition, and skill building). Topics covered include smartphone exposure tips, low light challenges, and studio portraits. Access to a camera (phone or DSLR) is essential.

4-H Night with the Columbus Blue Jackets

The Ohio 4-H Foundation is collaborating with the @Columbus Blue Jackets to raise money for Ohio 4-H! Click the link below to purchase tickets for the Blue Jackets’ game on March 3 vs. the Seattle Kraken. Ohio 4-H will have a block of seats in the upper bowl (section 205) and a portion of each ticket sale will come back to the 4-H program to support positive youth development.   • What: A fun, family night for 4-H at the Columbus Blue Jackets (CBJ vs Seattle Kraken). A portion of tickets sold will go to the Ohio 4-H program ($10 for upper bowl tickets and $20 for lower bowl tickets will come back to 4-H). 4-H will be recognized briefly at the game.
  • Who: This event will be marketed to all Ohio 4-H families (all 4-H professionals, donors/supporters, alumni, volunteers, members and families).
  • When: Friday, March 3rd at 7pm.
  • Where: Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH.

    • Lower bowl ‐ $69 per ticket.

  • Why/Purpose of the Event:
  • Raise money for Ohio 4-H. A portion of the ticket sales (purchased on the unique ticket website created for 4-H) will be given to the 4-H.
  • Provide a unique event for 4-H alumni and current 4-H families.
  • Promote the Ohio 4-H program to a new audience. There will be a brief slide and message in between periods during the game that will recognize 4-H.
