Masters of Science in Environmental Metrology & Policy

The Masters of Science in Environmental Metrology & Policy (EMAP) is a unique joint environmental measurements science (metrology) and policy program between Georgetown University, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
This interdisciplinary program offers rigorous classroom learning and rich hands-on real-life research experience in environmental metrology & policy making on how to reliably identify and quantify toxic and hazardous environmental stressors with the state-of-the-art instruments, assess their impacts to human health and ecological risks, and use the best available scientific data to support development of viable environmental policies and laws for the betterment of the world. Semester of Service

Application Deadline: Wednesday, November 8th

The Semester of Service Program is a leadership and service program that gives OSU students the opportunity to serve for a semester with a local nonprofit organization. Students are able to experience valuable insight into the function of community service. Requirements of this program are that the student is able to serve at least one volunteer shift (3-5) hours per week at their assigned nonprofit organization. Students must also be able to attend five workshops throughout the spring 2018 semester.

Preferences service focus areas include youth development, environmental stewardship, access to healthy lifestyles, refugee and immigration services, and food insecurity.

Sustainability Internship Opportunity with the Department of Athletics, Business Advancement, Business and Finance

The Department of Athletics, Business Advancement, Business and Finance is seeking a Sustainability Intern!

The focus of this position is to assist with data collection and project implementation that will move departments toward the University Sustainability Goals. Specific tasks assigned throughout the internship are broken down as follows:

  • 50% Conduct cost benefit analysis on both assigned and self-identified projects, working professionally with both internal and external stakeholders
  • 25% Assist with materials management infrastructure audits, updates, and zero waste events
  • 10% Research best practices for sustainability at universities and other relevant settings
  • 5% Develop and provide training for staff, clients, guests, students, and visitors as needed
  • 10% Other administrative tasks as assigned

Additionally, the department desires interns who meet these qualifications:

  • Enrolled full-time at The Ohio State University at least two (2) semesters per year
  • In good academic standing (at least a 2.0 GPA) in a related major or field
  • Students requiring ENR 4191 are encouraged to apply
  • Interest in sustainability demonstrated by area of study, participation in student organizations, community service or other similar activities
  • Experience coordinating, organizing, and implementing projects, programs and events
  • Strong personal organizational skills with ability to handle multiple tasks in a team environment, to work independently, and be detail oriented
  • Experience in using computers; knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; experience with internet use; ability to learn new software packages
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to use various modern media tools
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm and professional under pressure

  • Hours: 15+ weekly during the academic term, 36+ weekly during summer term

  • Pay: $8.50-9.50 per hour, based on experience

SURI: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is offering summer fellowships with Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) and Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS).

Candidates will join in on projects that deal with new methods to characterize and quantitate biochemical markers that are relevant in environmental exposures and chronic diseases.

This fellowship, falling between May 25-August 5, provides a $2,700/month stipend for full-time undergraduates and $3,400/month for full-time graduate students.

Applicants should be undergraduate or graduate students in applied sciences. Biology and chemistry majors are preferred.
