American Chemical Society- Buckeye Chapter

The OSU chapter of the American Chemical Society has several events planned for this semester, and is looking for interested chemistry students to join! A tentative list of events for Spring 2019 is as follows:

Internships at the Smithsonian

Pursue an internship position at the Smithsonian! There are fall, winter/spring, and summer positions available in a variety of roles. All of the following internships are unpaid positions.

Internship Positions

Smithsonian Sleepovers 
Assist in coordinating all aspects of the Smithsonian Sleepover program such as set-up, supervising craft activities, customer service, and maintaining supplies. Sleeping over in the museum is a requirement. View position details.

 

Development

Support staff in the Development Office through creating marketing materials, drafting grants and sponsor proposals, maintaining website text, and conducting research on funding sources for Development activities. View position details.

Discovery Theater

Support the Discovery Theater staff in all aspects: house management, ticketing and group sales, administration, and production support. Positions available: DT Admin/House Management | DT Technical Intern | DT Museum Theater & Education Intern

Adult Education Programming

Assist with research, booking, budgets, logistical set-up, contract negotiation, space rental, and event implementation. Assist with staffing duties during some evening and weekend programs. View position details.

Digital Marketing

Support Marketing staff editing images and HTML to be used in e-mail marketing campaigns and on social media sites as well as using web analytics software to research results from marketing campaigns. View position details.

Film Production

Supports marketing and programming teams by filming and producing video content. Attend and videotape select programs for promotional purposes and works with program managers to put together video clips for event presentations. View position details.

Performing Arts

Assist with research, booking, budgets, logistical set-up, and marketing. Provide program support during some evening and weekend programs, including box office and house management duties. View position details.

Special Events

Assist in coordinating all aspects of the SMITHSONIAN @ 8 program such as logistical support, customer service, event implementation, marketing, and research. View position details.

Social Media

Attend events and create new content on social media applications highlighting the activities of the Smithsonian Associates and represent the Smithsonian brand. View position details.

Studio Arts Classroom Assistant

Assist in administering adult Studio Arts classes. Primary responsibility is to ensure a positive classroom experience for students/instructors. View position details.

Studio Arts

Provide program support for studio arts courses and workshops and content for the Studio Arts blog, Studio Arts landing page, and Facebook fan page. View position details.

Summer Camp

Support the Smithsonian Summer Camp team by assisting with the daily running of the 9-week camp program, supervising campers and Youth Teacher Assistants, upkeep of rosters and camper paperwork, parent communication, and supply organization and procurement.

How to Apply

Apply online through the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System (SOLAA). Please carefully review the position description(s) prior to applying.

You will need to provide the following:

·        A current resume

·        A recent writing sample

·        Learning objectives

·        Academic transcript (unofficial are acceptable)

·        Two letters of recommendation from professors, advisors, or recent employers

Candidates will likely be asked to interview, either in person or over the phone, for their desired position.

Essential Tips for the Online Application

·        Do NOT submit your application until all necessary components are uploaded (i.e. transcripts, writing sample, resume). Once submitted, you cannot upload or change anything within the application.

·        An unofficial or official transcript can be uploaded by first scanning the document and saving it as a pdf or jpeg. Please do not mail the transcript separately.

·        Make sure that you click the “send email” button for reference letters. This triggers the system to email your references with instructions for uploading the letter. Please advise your references of this in advance.

·        All necessary components of an application must be received by the deadline in order to be considered. This includes letters of recommendation.

Interns selected for appointment at the Smithsonian Institution will be required to undergo a security background investigation and fingerprinting through the Office of Protection Services before they are accepted into an internship.

 

Undergraduate Summer Research at University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota is now accepting applicants for their 2019 Lando Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

Working with some of the top chemists in their fields, you will be actively engaged in research aimed at solving some of society’s most important environmental, health, and energy issues. Research in the department is collaborative and interdisciplinary. There are opportunities to participate in multi-disciplinary, collaborative research centers and initiatives.

As a researcher, you will:

  • conduct biomedical, medical, pharmaceutical, and materials research
  • have access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology
  • share your research as authors of papers published in prestigious scientific journals, at conferences, and at poster sessions

Each Chemistry Summer Research Fellow will receive a stipend of approximately $7400 to perform research over 10 weeks under direction of a chemistry faculty member on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The program also includes weekly lunches with faculty, a poster session, and various professional and social events. All fellows will be given the opportunity to live on campus for the duration of the program at a cost of approximately $1900.

Program dates are June 3-August 9, 2019. All appointments will be made within the time frame of June-August, with the first Monday in June reserved as a move-in day. Therefore, all travel arrangements may be made accordingly. Applicants are accepted from those students who are presently in their sophomore or junior year of undergraduate studies in chemistry or closely related fields. All students who fulfill these requirements are eligible to apply to the NSF/REU and the Lando Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Research Conference

A student organization at Virginia Tech is hosting a national research conference this spring! This conference is open to students of all STEM backgrounds who want to present their research, learn about STEM opportunities, and leave inspired and ready to change the world! The event will include panel sessions, student oral and poster presentations, and catered meals. You can also expect phenomenal keynote speakers such as Kate Biberdorf, Ph.D. (as seen on Stephen Colbert), Daniel Andruczyk, and John S. Iiames, Ph.D.

The conference is a two day event from March 23-24th at Virginia Tech. The deadline to apply has been extended to January 22nd, so don’t wait! For more information please visit the MAURC website.

Science & Engineering Leadership Initiative (SELI)

The University of Delaware is now accepting applications for their Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program – the Science and Engineering Leadership Initiative.

Motivated by the realization that people with disabilities are significantly underrepresented in STEM disciplines, UD’s REU program is unique in that they are focusing on providing students with disabilities a research and community building experience tailored to fostering success in graduate school and beyond.

The program is scheduled from June 10, 2019 to August 9, 2019 at the University of Delaware in Newark, Deleware. A stipend and housing are provided for the 9-week program.

The REU program is open to all undergraduate students with disabilities (mobility, sensory, learning, psychological, medical, or other) who are majors in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related fields.

Ohio At Home is currently seeking to hire new Patient Care Assistants from OSU students working towards a career in healthcare or human services, as this line of work most directly relates to their goals and can serve as a great opportunity to gain hours of patient care experience and develop a network of colleagues and professional references.

Ohio At Home is a home healthcare agency that employs primarily Ohio State students and provides direct care services to individuals with developmental disabilities in central Ohio. Their agency supports clients ranging from children with autism to adults with paraplegia/quadriplegia.

The role of Patient Care Assistant involves tasks of daily living, behavioral and emotional support, community involvement and direct patient care. Key traits for a successful Patient Care Assistant are patience, kindness, teamwork, a passion for service, and an eagerness to learn.

Although Ohio At Home’s PCA staff is primarily comprised of pre-health students, all majors and areas of interest are invited to apply. Scheduling is based on the university semester system and can accommodate academic and extracurricular commitments. Past patient care experience is not required to apply, but those with experience are also encouraged.

Summer Research at Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt University is now accepting applications for their summer 2019 NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates program in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering. The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) brings ten students each summer to campus to work closely with VINSE faculty on research projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering. Participation in the program provides students with a true interdisciplinary research experience in an environment where physicists, chemists, biologists, and all engineers collaboratively solve problems and create new scientific understanding. Weekly lunchtime meetings are held for all faculty and students that cover topics ranging from ethics and the responsible conduct of research to demystifying graduate school and the GRE examination. Each student works directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups and has access to the VINSE laboratories, which are shared facilities available to all authorized users. Volunteer with Scientific Thinkers

Interested in helping elementary students gain a better understanding of science? Scientific Thinkers is a student organization dedicated to providing hands-on science experience to underrepresented young students.

As a member and volunteer, you will be able to:

  • Teach and mentor students.
  • Make a positive impact on the Columbus community by sharing your knowledge and passion for science.
  • Gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the diversity of the STEM field.

Volunteer visits are available on Tuesdays from 1:00-3:30pm. Carpooling is available to and from the elementary school.

Internship Opportunity with Mettler Toledo

Mettler Toledo is a multinational manufacturer of scales and analytical instruments. It is the largest provider of weighing instruments for use in laboratory, industrial, and food retailing applications.

The company is looking for undergraduates to work as full-time paid interns ($16/hour) for this summer at their 1900 Polaris Parkway, Columbus, OH 43240 location. The intern can start earlier on a part-time basis, if their schedule permits.

The group sells and supports analytical chemical instrumentation such as titrators, density & refractive index instruments, Karl Fisher titrators, melting point apparatus, halogen moisture analyzers, analytical balances, differential scanning calorimeters, and UV VIS instrumentation. The intern will be assisting them running tests for customers, working in their testing lab, and helping them with training and other projects.

Summer Research at University of Nebraska

The University of Nebraska’s 10-week residential summer research experience provides mentoring and research participation while allowing scholars to preview graduate school life at a Research1 university. Participants all receive competitive stipends, room and board, travel/transport, graduate school preparation workshops, social and networking activities, and more.
