Live demonstrations on clipping for ranch and pleasure projects, saddle fitting, saddling and stirrup adjustments for optimal riding, halter fitting for field and ring, and proper chain use.

Giddy Up Stations

10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Event B Link

Have fun learning and engaging with other 4-Hers, with 4 rotating stations designed to teach members and their family in an engaging and interactive way!

Station 1: “Munching Madness” – Learn about horse nutrition requirements, smell and touch grain and hay to what is okay to feed and what is not.

Station 2: “Looking HORSEome” – Identify grooming tools, learn how to make your horse sparkle and get learn how to clean your grooming tools.

Station 3: “Show-It-Off” – Get ready to show by learning what to take, get tips and tricks to showing on a budget. Find out how to time your show prep so you aren’t rushing and what members are required to wear.

Station 4: “Let’s Hoof It Outta Here”? – Learn about proper hoof care, identify common hoof trouble and how to treat it!

Safety Stations

11:00 – 12:00 p.m. Event C Link

Get ready to participate in two exciting safety stations, designed to teach the member and their family how to keep themselves and their horse or pony safe!

Station 1: “Horse Space” – Work with a life sized cut out to determine what dangers zones are at the barn and show barn. Identify the meaning of red ribbons and learn horse to horse space. Finally learn how, where and what a safety knot is and why its vital to your horses safety.

Station 2: “Stall Knowledge 101” – Keep your horse from hurting itself or getting sick by learning key tips and tricks to ensure a stall is safe. Learn how to keep your horse cool in the heat at shows and the barn. Use a life-sized cut out to learn how to safely enter and exit stalls and truly understand the size of your equine!

Feed Time (Lunch)

12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Set down, take a break and enjoy some tasty pizza, chips and water, lemonade or tea.

“Horsing Around” Demonstrations

12:30 -1:30 p.m.

Gather round as you watch and learn from experts using live horses.

Demonstration 1: “Fitting This” Learn how to properly fit your horse and pony halter for the field and for the horse show. Understand when its appropriate to use the chain and how to use the chain safely and effectively. Watch and learn how to fit your horses Western and English bridles. Understand the importance of checking tack and blankets for saddles and learn how to adjust stirrups for an optimal ride and show.

Demonstration 2: “Brush – Clip – Bath – Repeat” Watch and learn how to make your horse sparkle. See how to properly care for your horses mane and tail for long luxurious locks! Get grooming tips that make a difference in the show ring to a judge. Get an example of what banding and braiding is. Clipping 101″: How and what to clip for Ranch and Western. Get tips and tricks to safely clip even the most reluctant horses, safely. Learn what equipment is needed and how to keep it good as new.

REMINDER: Horse ID Forms Due

Licking County 4-H Horse ID papers with a photo ID and the $5 fee are due by Thursday, April 28, 2022. Forms can be turned in to a Licking County 4-H Horse and Pony Council representative at the Licking County Extension Office between the hours of 11:00am and 1:00pm on Thursday, April 28th. If you are not able to drop your forms off during those hours, forms must be mailed to LC4-HHPC, P.O. BOX 87, Kirkersville, OH 43033. You can download/print the form HERE.

Dressage Schooling Show

Buckeye Equestrian Events has generously offered two free tests to any 4-H youth exhibitor trying to qualify for the Ohio State Fair Junior Horse Dressage Show. Western and Classical tests will be offered under 4-H approved judges. Office and stall fees still apply. Entries due April 18th. For more information please click here.

Ohio 4-H Horse Hippology/Judging/Horse Bowl Clinic

Did you know that the State 4-H Hipplogy, Horse Bowl and Judging Clinic is open to all ages? Youth, adults, and volunteers are all welcome to sign up and participate! This is a great event to attend and then take back lots of exciting new ideas to your club. The schedule and registration link for this year’s Hippology, Horse Judging, & Horse Bowl clinic are now available at here!

2022 State 4-H Horse Poster Contest

For youth currently enrolled in a 4-H or FFA horse project. The purpose of the Horse Poster Contest is to visually demonstrate 4-H and FFA equine project knowledge and to exhibit the diversity of 4-H and FFA equine projects. Posters will be judged and displayed in the Gilligan Complex from Monday, July 18th through Wednesday, July 20th. Posters may be picked up at the Ohio State Fair 4-H Horse Show office beginning the afternoon of Wednesday, July 20th– Friday, July 22nd.

Registration and poster must be postmarked by February 26th, 2022. Late entries will not be accepted. Both registration and poster must be sent to the address provided on the official registration form. The poster may also be submitted in person at the Communications Contest or Hippology/Horse Bowl/Judging Clinic on Saturday February 26th, 2022 during the contest or clinic check-ins.

If you’re interested in competing in the State 4-H Horse Poster Contest, please be sure to complete your registration form and stop by the Extension Office (or email it to mccutcheon.46@osu.edu) to have it signed.

2022 Equine Education Competition Teams Forming

Have you ever considered getting involved in Horse Bowl, Hippology or Horse Judging, but didn’t know where to start? We’ve got just what you need! An informational session will be held on January 25th, that will help you in better understanding each event, and allow you to sign up to participate! For those who have competed previously, please know that we want you to attend as well! The Horse Bowl contest is on April 9th and the Hippology/Judging contest is on June 13th.  All 4-H members enrolling in a Horse project are eligible to participate.

Please join us for an informational meeting, so that we can establish team and plan practice dates and times…

Attendance during this organizational meeting is very important!
