2019 Buckeye Vet Camp

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine is offering a summer residential camp for current high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors. This is a five day residential camp that gives participants an opportunity to learn more about veterinary school and the profession. The program takes place in a university environment and includes both social and educational activities.

During Buckeye Vet Prep Camp attendees will:

  • Work side by side with current veterinary students as counselors and explore the world of veterinary medicine.
  • Take a behind the scenes tour of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
  • Learn about the diverse career options in veterinary medicine.
  • Participate in mock classes,  labs and community service activities

All students will be considered, but priority will be given to students who are considered traditionally underrepresented in veterinary medicine, which can include males and individuals from socioeconomic and or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. We accept both in state and out of state students.

The cost to attend the camp is $600 and includes food and lodging. There are a limited number of scholarships available through a separate application.

For more information and to register, please visit vet.osu.edu/VetCamp. Registrations are due by 5:00pm on Friday, April 26, 2019.

4-H Special Needs Camp is July 5th-7th, 2019

“4-H is for everyone,” but sometimes accessibility issues deny youth with disabilities the opportunity to attend camp. In Ohio, a statewide 4-H camp is held at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio for young people with disabilities and their caregivers.  Being a typical kid is what Camp is all about and it is no different for special needs youth. Our goal is to give Campers a true experience of Camp while meeting their needs and letting them set their own pace for fun and success!

The Camp allows youth to actively participate in activities such as environmental science, crafts, music therapy, outdoor education, aquatic skills, and self-reliability.  The youth, along with their caregivers, enjoy 2 nights and 2 days of a camping experience that may not have been available otherwise through 4-H.

If you would like more information about attending or supporting Special Needs Camp at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp, please contact Michelle Stumbo, Camp Program Director, at 740-992-6696 or Stumbo.5@osu.edu.

2019 Registration Form is available here!

2019 Mini Camp!

Mini Camp will be held on May 10-11, 2019 at 4-H Camp Ohio. Mini Camp is a great opportunity for our members who are in their last year as a Cloverbud, or are in their first of second year as a 4-H project member. This one night camp is a great way for participants to get a “taste” of 4-H Camp. They will do a camp tour, complete counselor led activities and get to sleep in a cabin. We have found that youth who attend Mini Camp are more likely to attend 4-H Summer Residential Camp and are less likely to feel homesick while at camp. Registration Form and payment are due Friday, April 26, 2019 to the Licking County OSU Extension Office, 771 E. Main St., Suite 103, Newark, Ohio 43055.

Community Service Opportunity – Quilting for a Cause

A quilt is a special gift, one that can spread comfort to those in need. Through their generosity, the Hope Quilting Club has donated over 5,000 handmade blankets to those in the greatest of need. Hope Lutheran has partnered with Lutheran World Relief Organization to insure that families around the world will receive some of life’s essentials.
The beneficiary of these gifts come from chronic poverty and conflict. Your help could change lives.

How You Can Help…
Whether you have a few extra minutes to spare or a lot of extra fabric to share, a little generosity goes a long way when it comes to quilting for charity. No experience necessary.

  • Come to Hope Lutheran Church, located at 15370 Meridith State Road, Sunbury, OH, on the last full weekend of the month.
  • Have little ones at home or a troop you would like to get started with charitable giving? We have many options for them to contribute. Learn how to hem, tie knots for the quilts and thread needles.
  • Don’t know how to sew? No problem! We have volunteers that can show you the basics of sewing and there are other ways you can volunteer.
  • Pick up a quilting kit: We have material you can cut into 10” square blocks. You can cut them at home and bring them in on Saturday and help stitch them together.
  • Donate material: we accept all material with the exception of knit and wool.

JOANN 4-H Clovers for Kids Campaign March 1 – April 30, 2019

4-H and JOANN stores want to see more Licking County 4-H kids learning by doing, creating and making.  Thousands of local 4-H members, staff, volunteers and supporters will join with JOANN customers to ensure more kids get that chance through a new Clover for Kids campaign to bring hands-on 4-H programs to Licking County.

The Clovers for Kids campaign kicks off in 865 JOANN stores nationwide March 1 and will extend through April 30. Supporters will have a chance to show their support by purchasing $1 and $4 Paper Clovers to equip local Clubs with resources to reach more kids in need.

Studies show that many students lose their natural love of learning somewhere between kindergarten and their senior year of high school. When more Licking County youth have access to local 4-H programming, they will participate in hands-on projects where they can design, create and make for themselves. These experiences are proven to rekindle a love of learning and produce a variety of benefits – from strengthening their creativity and imaginative thinking to improving their motor skills, coordination and self-esteem.

Proceeds from the Paper Clover campaign will directly support Ohio and Licking County 4-H programs. With the $4 Paper Clover, customers will also receive a coupon for $4 off their next purchase.

In addition, JOANN wants to support individual 4-H’ers involvement by providing a rewards card for 4-H members, leaders, staff, and parents.  The rewards card gives holders 15% off their purchase every day.  To sign up go to https://www.joann.com/4-h/
