Project Judging Information and Reminders

Licking County 4-H Project Judging will take place on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at CTEC in Newark (150 Price Rd). Please review the following information so you know what to expect and what to bring to judging.

General Information:

  • ALL members with a Clothing, Food, or Special Interest project who plan to be judged should have scheduled a judging time already. If you have not done so, reach out to Adrienne at anderson.1410@osu.edu to see what options are still available.
  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled judging time. This will allow you to get checked in, fill in the top portion of your scoresheet, and have a few minutes to prepare yourself for judging. Most of our judges have a very full schedule so being on time and ready for your appointment will help us to keep everyone on schedule.
  • ALL project members must bring their completed project book to judging. The only exception are those taking a self-determined project or a master level project (i.e. Leadership Master, Woodworking Master, etc.). Those members are encourage to use the printable project guides available online but are not required to do so. All members should also have some form of visual or other supporting materials with their project. Please review the Licking County 4-H Project Requirements to ensure you have all necessary parts of your project for judging.
  • When you arrive at CTEC, please enter through Entrance 4. You can then enter through the doors next to the preschool. When you arrive to the rotunda, please check in at the table with a 4-H Committee member. Please then have a seat and wait for your judging appointment.
  • When you hear your name called, please bring your things to the judging area. If you need help carrying your project, please let us know so that we can assist you. Parents/guardians will NOT be allowed in the judging area.
  • ALL items a member brings must be able to be carried/moved into the judging area. Judges will not have the time to leave the judging area to view projects outside or in vehicles. If you are unable to carry/move your project into the judging area, then photos or a video of the project must suffice.
  • We request that members only bring 1-2 people with them to judging. Limiting the number of people in the waiting area helps reduce crowding and helps with the noise level when we are calling the names of members for their judging appointment.
  • Members will receive a copy of their scoresheet from the judge once their interview is complete. Members will receive their project grade at that time. No other awards/honors will be announced during the judging process. Results will be posted to the website on the Awards, Results, and Recognition page in the days following project judging. All members receiving a Superior, Honorable Mention, State Fair Representative or any specialty awards will be recognized at the Licking County 4-H Style Revue and Achievement Night on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 6:30pm at the Reese Center on the Ohio State Newark and COTC Campus.

Project Specific Information:

  • SHOOTING SPORTS: Guns, bows, arrows, ammunition, and firearms of any kind are not permitted during judging. Participants may not use any of these items or three – dimensional replicas of these items as a part of any display. Displays also may not include any part of an arrow longer than 6 inches. Displays may not include any ‘loaded’ ammunition. Any shells or casings must be open so that a visual examination can show that there is no powder in ammunition (the caps must be either absent or expended).
  • FOODS AND NUTRITION: Please review the Licking County 4-H Project Requirements for more details.
    • All members should bring their project book, project portfolio, table setting, and food item.

    • Judges are not required to sample the food item, but may do so at their discretion.
  • CLOTHING: Please review the Licking County 4-H Project Requirements for more details.
    • All members should bring their project book, clothing item(s), pattern (if applicable), and any other supporting materials they may have.
    • Members must bring a photo of them wearing their outfit to judging. This will be attached to the scoresheet and will be used by the judges when making final selections at the Style Revue.
    • There will be a dressing room available for members to change into their garments. Members are encouraged to arrive earlier than 15 minutes to their appointment to allow time for them to change.
    • If a member is nominated for the Construction Award or Wool Award, once they leave the judging area they should change out of their outfit and bring the garments they made to Adrienne to hold for the day. The judges will select the Junior and Senior Construction Award winners and the Wool Award winner at the end of the judging day. Members may return to judging to pick up their garments from 3:00-4:30pm or Adrienne will bring the garments back to the Extension Office and they can be picked up there during normal business hours.
    • Members must model their outfit at the Licking County 4-H Style Revue and Achievement Night on Thursday, July 21st in order to be eligible for any award beyond a Superior. Volunteers Needed for the 4-H Center at the Hartford Fair

Volunteers are needed in the 4-H Center during the Hartford Fair. The 4-H Center is open from 10:00am to 8:00pm each day of the fair. Volunteer shifts are one hour and volunteers just need to keep an eye on the building and answer general questions from fair visitors. This is a great opportunity relax for an hour or two in the air conditioning while helping promote 4-H and support those clubs and members who are displaying their projects in the 4-H Center. 4-H members are encouraged to participate, but we do ask that an adult be present with the members while they work their shift.

To sign up for a 4-H Center shift, please visit go.osu.edu/Hartford4HCenter. If you have questions, please reach out to Adrienne Anderson at anderson.1410@osu.edu.

I’ve Submitted My Fair Entries… Now What?

Hopefully you were able to submit your fair entries by the June 18th deadline. The next step will be to check your verification letters when they arrive. All entries (open and junior classes) will be mailed verification letters. Those letters will be going out in the mail late next week so please be sure to watch for them. Once they arrive, please take the time to review them to ensure that they are correct. If you find an error, you must contact the Hartford Fair Office before Friday, July 22nd to have the correction made. NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE AFTER JULY 22, 2022.

A few thing to keep in mind…

  • For Junior Fair Entries (4-H specifically), the address listed in 4-HOnline is the address that will be used to mail your entries. If you have moved since you completed your 4-H enrollment, if you forgot to update your address when completing your enrollment, OR if your mailing address is a PO Box but you have your physical address listed in 4-HOnline, you will need to correct that immediately. Please reach out to Adrienne Anderson at anderson.1410@osu.edu to have your address updated. She will then reach out to the fair office with your corrected address.
  • If you do not receive your verification letter or you will be out of town or unable to check your mail, please know that you can reach out to Beth at the fair office. She would be happy to provide you with the information so that you are able to confirm that your entries are correct.
  • We encourage members to have their advisors look over their verification letters to help catch any mistakes or issues.
  • PLEASE take the time to check and confirm that your entries are correct. Checking for and correcting mistakes now will set members up to have a good experience come fair time.
