Licking County 4-H Teen Interest Inventory

4-H members who will be 14 years old or older next year should have received an email about completing the Teen Interest Inventory. In case you missed it, here is the information:

We have many exciting opportunities available specifically for teens for the 2021 4-H year. Since most clubs don’t meet much, if at all, during the fall and winter, it can be easy to miss deadlines. By completing the Teen Interest Inventory, it let’s us know which opportunities that you are interested in so that we can send you the information specific to those opportunities when it becomes available. For instance, if you mark that you are interested in becoming a camp counselor, we will send you a link to the application along with other information once it becomes available so that you don’t miss the chance to apply! This interest inventory is not a commitment to applying for the opportunities you select, it is just a way to let us know to send you more information J.

The teen opportunities are listed below. Once you have reviewed them and know which ones you are interested in, please follow this link to complete the survey: https://osu.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_78IpkZ8jHY2pC17Please complete the survey before it closes on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

Victory Gardens Program Expands In Its First Month

More than 2,600 Packets Distributed, Four More Counties Added

REYNOLDSBURG, OH (September 10, 2020) – A tremendous response to the just launched Victory Gardens campaign has resulted in an immediate expansion of the program. The program took off immediately and demand was so high for seed packets, four more counties were added: Fairfield, Licking, Mahoning, and Summit. Seed pick-up days and times for each office are available on the Ohio Victory Gardens website. The collaboration between the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) and Ohio State University (OSU) Extension Offices has delivered more than 2,600 seed packets to ten counties across the state.

Victory Gardens originated during World War I, an answer to a severe food shortage at the time. The idea was wildly successful, growing an army of amateur gardeners and serving to boost morale and patriotism. Although there’s no food shortage now, ODA and OSU Extension are reviving the effort and once again encouraging people to plant seeds, realize the fruits of their labor, and share with others if inspired.

Seed packets were originally distributed through six OSU Extension Offices: Clark, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton, Lucas, and Washington counties.

The Victory Gardens Program will continue and expand with a larger seed distribution across the state in the spring. It also offers a full website with details on seed distribution, advice, and resources on every aspect of planting and harvesting produce.

4-H CARTEENS Facilitators Needed

The Licking County 4-H CARTEENS program is looking for teen facilitators. The 4-H CARTEENS is a teen leadership program in partnership with the Licking County Juvenile Courts to teach safe driving practices to minors who have made traffic violations. The program is held once a month, typically on the first Thursday of the month, from 5:00-7:00pm. Facilitators help set up the materials, check in participants, introduce speakers, and work with groups with hands-on activities.

Youth should be at least 15-years-old to become a facilitator. CARTEENS can help teens to focus on learning leadership and public speaking skills. It is a great opportunity for those teens who may want to be involved in a 4-H Teen Leader activity, but may not have the time to commit to some of the more time intensive opportunities. Hours working with CARTEENS are eligible for school volunteer requirements and facilitators are eligible to apply for a scholarship their senior year of high school.

If you have questions or would be interested in becoming a CARTEENS facilitator, please contact Adrienne at anderson.1410@osu.edu or 740.670.5315.
