Pastures for Profit will be offered in-person this June in Logan County

Plan now to join us in June

Pastures for Profit is a collaborative program between Ohio State, Ohio Forage and Grassland Council, Ohio Department of Agriculture, and Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Curriculum for Pastures for Profits has been evolving since the 1990s, and it includes topics such as grazing management, plant physiology, fencing & water infrastructure, economics, and more. Participants in 2025 PFP programs will receive a new manual that includes revised goal setting worksheets, new soil management information, and other changes.

If you are interested in participating in an in-person Pastures for Profit series, join us in Logan County on June 10th and 12th at 5:30 pm. Presentations on Tuesday night will cover goal setting, growth habits of perennial forages, soil fertility, and other topics, and speakers will be present from ODA, OSU, and NRCS. Thursday night will take place on-farm, and participants will get experience with fencing tools, pasture evaluation, plant identification, and other topics.

Spring Fencing Clinic, April 25th

Make plans to join us in Caldwell for a Spring Fencing Clinic at 10:00 a.m. on April 25 at the OSU Extension Operations Building (16714 Wolf Run Rd. Caldwell). The event will include hands-on demonstrations and practice with fence building techniques and tools from morning to afternoon. Lunch will be provided for a noon break with activity continuing into the afternoon and concluding by 4:00 p.m.

Virtual Beef School, session 3; focused on Managing Open Cows and Culls

All things considered the past 6 to 8 months have collectively been some of the most stressful conditions experienced in Ohio in years. With the 2024 drought followed by mud, followed by the coldest mid-winter in years, plus temperatures that have gone from one extreme to another multiple times since, regardless if calving in spring or fall, that stress can prove to be devastating on the pregnancy rates of a cow herd.

The third session of the 2025 Ohio Virtual Beef School on March 26 featured a deep dive into two resulting questions that should be on every cattleman’s mind: Why Are My Cows Open? and Open Cows – Keep or Cull? Listen in below as the recent virtual Ohio Beef School explored those two topics.

The OSU Extension’s water quality team is back for the 4th year of their Certified Livestock Management webinar series. Including the next session on April 7 and continuing on June 2, August 4, October 6, and December 1, these webinars will cover topics relevant to Certified Livestock Managers, as well as Certified Crop Advisers. Each webinar will be recorded and posted to the OSU Agronomy Team’s YouTube Channel for later viewing.

Following the presentation, each webinar will provide an avenue for audience members to ask questions of our unique panel of speakers for that day’s event. The Department of Animal Science at the Ohio State University is looking to hire 9-month tenure-track position with a primary focus on beef cattle nutrition The ideal candidate will establish or expand a research program in one or more areas of ruminant nutrition that build upon departmental strengths. Among the areas of interest are, but not limited to, production management, feedlot nutrition, precision livestock nutrition, nutrient metabolism, and nutritional strategies for improving product quality. The successful candidate will be a leader in beef cattle nutrition education, including formal classroom instruction for students and Extension to producers and other livestock industry stakeholders.

Dairy Beef Feeder 101, a look at calf health, nutrition and economics

In recent years the dairy beef feeder calf project throughout Ohio has gained interest and shown tremendous growth. During the same time the cost of participating in the dairy beef feeder calf project has grown significantly.

On February 19, 2025, Ohio State University Extension hosted a webinar via ZOOM and took a detailed look into the economics of dairy beef feeders in 2025, strategies for keeping calves healthy, and providing proper nutrition for the dairy beef feeder from birth until the conclusion of the project.

Forage Resiliency Webinar Series

The Ohio State Integrated Forage Management Team will be offering a three-part Zoom webinar series on forage resiliency to cover information on how to remain resilient to a variety of environmental challenges in forage production systems.
