Hong Kong University of Science and Technology:
Three Open Positions in Anthropology, Art History, and Philosophy

1. Open Rank Professor of Anthropology

The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for a substantiation-track position in Anthropology, with an expected starting date of 2 July 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. We invite applications at all ranks (Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor), though we especially welcome applications at the level of Professor and Associate Professor with substantiation.

The position is for a scholar of Chinese anthropology whose research focuses on the Greater Bay Area, South China, Southwest China, or Southeast Asia. Preferred areas of expertise would include ecological or environmental anthropology, or other areas that help build links across the university, but strong applicants with other interests are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in the South China Research Centre in the School of Humanities and Social Science.

The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research and teaching as well as a strong publication record appropriate to career stageFor applicants at the level of Associate Professor or Professor, a record of obtaining competitive external funding will be a plus. 

Starting salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave and medical/dental benefits will be provided. Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable. Initial appointment at Assistant Professor rank will normally be on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement.  A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.

2. Open Rank Professor of Art History

The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for an open-rank (Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor) substantiation-track position in Art History, with an expected starting date of 2 July 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. While the preference is to hire at the Assistant Professor level, exceptional candidates at the Associate Professor and Professor level will be considered.

The position is for a scholar of East Asian art; expertise in China is especially welcome. The ideal candidate would possess research interests in traditional media (including but not limited to painting, sculpture, architecture, or photography) as well as the ability to apply new methodologies to their study. Successful candidates are expected to be able to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in contemporary multimedia art, surveys of East Asian art and media, and specialized courses

Applicants should either have or will receive a Ph.D. degree in Art History (or related field) by August 2026. The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for a substantiation-track position in Philosophy, with an expected starting date of 2 July 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. We invite applications at all ranks (Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor), though we especially welcome applications at the level of Professor and Associate Professor with substantiation.

While the subject area is open, a research background in Confucianism – and/or expertise in ethics, bioethics, moral philosophy, religion, or other areas of contemporary relevance – would be an advantage; strong applicants in other areas are also welcome to apply.
