The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Rhodes College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Chinese Studies to begin Fall of 2020. Rhodes College believes that diversity and inclusion are critical to our success as an institution, and we seek to recruit, develop, and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool. Preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on modern Chinese and/or Sinophone literature. Native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin and English is required. The successful candidate must demonstrate a firm commitment to teaching and scholarship at a liberal arts college and will be expected to maintain an active research program. Research will be supported by start-up funds. Possibilities for additional research support include summer research funds and travel funds. Collaborative research and teaching opportunities exist with several interdisciplinary programs, including Asian Studies, Film and Media Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies, among others. Teaching responsibilities will include five courses a year from the following: basic and intermediate language courses, upper-level research and seminar courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, and literature courses in translation. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies or a related field by July 2020.
