Stein Ringen, author of The Perfect Dictatorship, is both plain-spoken and nuanced in this interview with Teng Biao:
He says the regime has been successful (and for the foreseeable future will remain so) in controlling “the narrative” and, through it, Chinese society and international attitudes; notes how the heightening of coercive control belies claims to performance-based legitimacy; and feels that the removal of Presidential term limits was a mistake,. but by no means a fatal one.
