Cha, now aged 93, is also as a publisher, editor and political commentator who founded Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper.

His novels have been translated and published in English, yet Cha admits that Western readers may find his novels hard to appreciate, as the adventures are intricately interwoven with Chinese idioms, folklore and culture.

Among 300 items on display is a set of hand-written drafts of The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, which Jin wrote in 1967.
