The Sinophone Studies conference at Harvard last week went very well. My colleague at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, James, has kindly made three audio recordings of the conference available online. We would like to share these recordings with the MCLC community.–Ying Lei <lying@fas.harvard.edu>

“Empires of the Sinophone” 華語語系帝國

As the keynote lecture of the Sinophone Studies: New Directions conference, Professor Shu-mei Shih considers how Sinophone studies addresses the intersection of multiple empires and their relation to other imperial language studies that are both European and non-European. Professor Shih argues that empires not only competed and colluded with each other, they also imitated each other. They sometimes co-existed over the same locales and at other times followed each other in sequence. This and other configurations of interimperiality structurally inform the multilingual, multiethnic, and multicultural communities of the Sinophone outside China and on the margins of China and Chineseness. Hence, Anglophone, Francophone, Japanophone, and other imperial language studies should not be taken as mere parallels, but rather as conjunctural or sequential formations of inter-imperiality. “Empires of the Sinophone” adresses such inter-imperiality as a fundamental condition of Sinophone studies.
