In terms of rhetoric, the phrase most associated with Cai Yuanpei that captures the liberal ideal in higher education is: “Inclusiveness” (兼容并包). Not sure where he used the phrase, but it is widely connected to the kind of pluralist intellectual environment Cai sought to forge at Beida. In 1988, the painter Shen Jiawei (沈嘉蔚) eulogized this ideal with an oil painting that used the phrase as its title.
