Let’s talk about dealing with farm stress

Can farm work and farm life really balance? That’s the focus and title of a workshop set for 3–4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, during the Ohio Ecological Food and Farming Association (OEFFA) conference.

Led by Taylor Mendell of Vermont’s Footprint Farm and Kelly Cabral, a CFAES graduate student and a prevention coordinator with Ohio State’s Ohio Youth Resilience Collaborative, the online workshop will feature a discussion of “managing stresses big and small.”

Keep your backyard chickens healthy

Check out “Top 10 Diseases of Backyard Poultry,” a workshop by OSU Extension educator Tim McDermott, DVM, during the upcoming Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA) conference. McDermott will help you identify and prevent the most common diseases of backyard poultry.

How to make farming inclusive to everyone

When you think of a farmer, what comes to mind? CFAES alumna Yolanda Owens ’07, president of the CFAES Alumni Society Board of Directors and the first Black/Latinx person to hold this position, will tackle the topic in a talk called “Black Culture and Green Thumbs” during the online portion of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association’s (OEFFA) upcoming annual conference.

Register soon for OEFFA conference

Registration is open for the annual conference of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association, which organizers call the region’s premier sustainable food and farm conference.

The conference includes CFAES as one of its sponsors, and some of its many speakers will be from CFAES. It’s set for Feb. 12 online and Feb. 17–19 in Dayton.

The latest science on animal agriculture and the environment

Waste to Worth 2022, described as for “those who make or influence environmental management decisions on livestock and poultry farms,” takes place April 18–22 near Toledo. CFAES Dean Cathann A. Kress, OSU Extension climate specialist Aaron Wilson, and Chris Winslow, director of Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory, will be among the speakers.

A $15 million grant from the National Science Foundation will establish the first national academic research network on wasted food in the United States, and Brian Roe, holder of the Fred N. Van Buren Professorship in Farm Management in the CFAES Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics, is set to be one of its co-principal investigators.
