Still time to get in on algal bloom conference; or, ‘THAT’S why you listen to scientists’

Organizers of the CFAES-co-hosted Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science Conference have extended the registration deadline to Wednesday, Sept. 7. The event is Sept. 15 in Toledo. Later that day, the conference site, the Stranahan Theater and Great Hall, is coincidentally hosting a performance by comedian Lewis Black, who coincidentally talks about science and the environment in a 2012 video here.

Lake Erie algae despite drought

Dry summer notwithstanding, NOAA officials recently “identified patches of scum within Maumee Bay.” The scum is potentially toxic algae. Maumee Bay is in far western Lake Erie around Toledo. Tom Henry reported the story, including with comments from Chris Winslow of the Ohio State-based Ohio Sea Grant program, in the Aug. 20 Toledo Blade.

Prince Albert of Monaco to visit Ohio State

Bolstering Ocean Resilience: H.S.H. Prince Albert II of MonacoPrince Albert II of Monaco, a long-time supporter of global environmental and sustainability issues, will visit Ohio State next week. He’ll give a lecture on climate change, biodiversity and access to clean water at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High Street in Columbus.
