Ecological farming pop-up tour is in Columbus today

The Growing Right Oral History Project pop-up tour, a look at the history of ecological farming in Ohio, appears today from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Franklin Park Conservatory Farmers’ Market in Columbus.

It’s part of the 2017 Ohio Sustainable Farm Tour and Workshop Series.

CFAES’s Sustainable Agriculture Team is a co-presenter of the series.

NOAA forecast: Western Lake Erie due for significant harmful algal bloom

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and its research partners, which include Ohio State, are predicting that western Lake Erie will experience a significant harmful algal bloom this summer.

NOAA announced the forecast at a July 13 event and webinar co-hosted by Ohio State’s Ohio Sea Grant program. The event took place at Ohio State’s Stone Laboratory at Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie. CFAES Agronomic Systems Field Specialist Greg LaBarge was one of the speakers.

Ohio educators: Explore 2 ‘amazing’ resources for teaching about nature, the environment

A July 18-19 workshop on Ohio State’s Mansfield campus — called A Walk Through Ohio’s Forests: The Good, the Bad and the Invasive — will feature two helpful tools for teaching students about nature and the environment. Co-sponsors of the event include CFAES’s School of Environment and Natural Resources and OSU Extension outreach arm. Register by Friday.

New report out on Ohio’s algal bloom efforts

July 13: Stone Lab guest lecture by algal bloom experts

Experts who are slated to speak at NOAA’s 2017 Seasonal Forecast of Harmful Algal Blooms for Lake Erie, which is this Thursday, July 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ohio State’s Stone Lab, also will present the lab’s weekly guest lecture program later that evening, at 7 p.m.

July 16: See ‘innovative approach to land tenure,’ sustainable urban farm

The Ohio Sustainable Farm Tour and Workshop Series continues on Sunday, July 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. with a farm open house at Foraged & Sown in Columbus.

Foraged & Sown, the event description says, “uses an innovative approach to land tenure — building relationships with multiple land owners to farm and forage on diverse sites — to create a low-impact, sustainable urban farm.”
