Department of Human Sciences

human_nutrition_chartThe mission of the Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University is to generate, disseminate, and apply knowledge in the areas of human nutrition and dietetics to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and associated organizational systems.  They are committed to the discovery of new information about the relationships between diet, physical activity, health, and disease, and the application of such knowledge to individuals, communities and entire populations.

Research covers the entire spectrum of nutritional sciences, from public policy to clinical to molecular and cell biology. However, research is focused on three primary areas: dietary modulation of gene expression and cell communication, dietary prevention and treatment of obesity and other chronic diseases, and public health nutrition. The overlap of these seemingly diverse activities is profound and provides opportunities for meaningful collaborations among the faculty and students working on various research teams. These departmental partnerships not only create a team-focused environment, but also add to a broad understanding of nutrition science. They help address the common goal of using dietary approaches in conjunction with physical activity to prevent and treat disease and to optimize health.
