Ohio Sheep Day Programming – October 2, 2021

Dr. Brady Campbell, Program Coordinator, OSU Sheep Team

After a long year away from you, The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences and Ohio Sheep Improvement Association (OSIA) are excited to announce that the 2021 Ohio Sheep Day will be held live, in person on Saturday, October 2nd at the OARDC Small Ruminant Center located at 5651 Fredericksburg Road, Wooster, OH 44691.

For those new to this program, this year is a bit different as we have chosen to provide this program in the fall as opposed to the summer. This unique opportunity will allow participants to see some alternative systems not previously highlighted in years past.

As we did in 2019, this year’s program will offer attendees the opportunity to visit one of Ohio State’s research stations that focuses on efficient ruminant livestock and forage production. This programs aim is to provide producers with the tools they need to continue increasing on-farm livestock and forage production.

A list of programming topics include:

  • Growing and grazing alternative forage crops
  • Forage storage options
  • Manure and mortality composting
  • Fall lambing systems
  • Dystocia troubleshooting
  • Flock data collection and utilization
  • Animal handling
  • OARDC small ruminant facilities

As always, our children’s program will continue this year with fun and educational sheep-themed activities structured for youth ages 4-12. This program will consist of a pumpkin painting activity and take place in the afternoon. For those interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please inquire at registration.

Registration, which is paid at the door, includes both breakfast and a boxed lunch. Prices will differ based upon OSIA status whereas the fee for attendance is $20 per person for OSIA members and $30 per person for non-OSIA members. New for registration this year, pre-registration is required in order for us to provide our carters with an accurate head count for lunch due to COVID-19 restrictions. To pre-register, please follow this link, view the attached flyer, or scan the QR code provided on the left. Additionally, OSIA memberships will be made available for purchase at the event.
