For the week of 7/15-7/21. This is the first week where we have had a significant increase in Western Bean Cutworm (WBC) numbers. Scout 10 different areas of 10 corn plants within a field for egg masses. The economic threshold is 5 egg masses per 100 plants scouted. Eggs range in color from white to purple (close to hatching) are are usually found on upper leaves of the plant.

For the week of 7/8-7/14. No traps at the economic threshold for treatment for Western Bean Cutworm (WBC), European Corn Borer (ECB), or Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). Compared to 2017 WBCW numbers are much lower, I anticipate an increase over the next couple of weeks as later planted corn tassels and pollinates.

How USDA Services Will Be Affected by Government Shutdown

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue outlined U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) services available in the event of a government shutdown.

“USDA is committed to safeguarding life and property through the critical services we provide – and should the government shut down, we will continue to do just that,” said Secretary Perdue. “I am proud of each USDA employee for everything they do to benefit the farmers, ranchers, foresters, and producers who depend on our services. Farm Groups Launch “Farm Town Strong” Campaign to Address Rural Opioid Epidemic

As farming communities face mounting challenges with the nation’s opioid epidemic, the nation’s two largest general farm organizations are teaming up to confront the issue. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and National Farmers Union (NFU) announced a new campaign, “Farm Town Strong,” to raise awareness of the crisis’ impact on farming communities. The campaign will also provide resources and information to help farm communities and encourage farmer-to-farmer support to overcome the crisis.
