- How they scam
- There are NO companies that should be going door to door soliciting business, we have enough tree problems in this area that the ISA Certified Arborists (International Society of Arboricutlure) and other reputable companies are extremely busy doing their job!
- Government/County Mandated
- Emerald Ash Borer has NO funds to remove trees for property owners.
- No “supposed” tree removal person should be soliciting business on behalf of a government entity mandate.
- Clermont County has a special area for Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication. This is only in the quarantined area and the USDA – APHIS and ODA are the only government agencies who inspect for insect/larval damage who have government funds that mandate removal for an invasive species. (United States Department of Agriculture – Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service and Ohio Department of Agriculture)
- Payment upfront
- No, No, No. The scammer takes payment and then they do not return to complete the work. This reminds me of the old Popeye cartoon and Wimpy saying, “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!” Never give someone money upfront expecting service in return.
- Avoiding Scam
- Don’t hire door to door solicitation
- Check references – ie. isa-arbor.com
- If they require a deposit, get a second quote to see if it is relative
- Always, get a receipt for service provided
