Important Skillathon Update for State Fair Exhibitors

Attention State Fair Exhibitors!

It is REQUIRED for state fair exhibitors competing for Overall Breeding Exhibitor to compete in the VIRTUAL skillathon. Registration for virtual skillathon has been extended to June 18th.

Exhibitors have to register by JUNE 18th. 

It is REQUIRED for state fair exhibitors competing for Overall Market Exhibitor to compete in the IN-PERSON skillathon during State Fair.

Note: 4-H /FFA youth do not have to be exhibiting or taking animal projects to participate.

2021 Ohio 4-H Youth Skillathons

Ohio 4-H youth skillathon information for virtual and in-person sessions is now online. Rules and flyer for both are also posted.

  • Those exhibiting at Ohio State Fair and want to be eligible for OUTSTANDING MARKET EXHIBITOR (OME) awards must participate at the IN-PERSON skillathons at the state fair.
  • Those exhibiting at Ohio State Fair and want to be eligible f or OUTSTANDING BREEDING EXHIBITOR (OBE) awards must participate in the VIRTUAL skillathons online.

Test Your Knowledge at Ohio State Fair Skillathons

4-H and FFA youth can show what they know about 9 different animal species through 10 skillathon events during the Ohio State Fair (see the schedule below). Skillathons are free, registration is the day of the event (an adult must accompany the youth), youth can come anytime between the hours listed, and youth do not have to be a state fair exhibitor or be enrolled in an animal project in order to complete. Youth vying for the Outstanding Market Exhibitor (OME) award for goat, sheep, poultry, swine, and beef must participate in the Skillathon, showmanship, and live animal show in order to qualify. WANTED: Members for the Ohio 4-H State Skillathon Team

Attention Youth Interested in the Ohio 4-H State Skillathon Team:

There will be an information session on January 20th, 2019, (2:00 – 4:00 PM) at the Animal Sciences Building (2029 Fyffe Rd, Columbus, OH 43210) for those interested in an opportunity to be chosen to represent Ohio during the National 4-H Livestock Skillathon Contest in Louisville in November.

Anyone interested is encouraged to attend the January session to ask any questions, etc.  Please respond with your intentions to be at the first session to Lizz Share at share.8@osu.eduPlease respond by January 16th, 2019.

Starting in January, practice sessions will be conducted to work on individual and team activities on Sunday afternoons (2:00 – 4:00 PM) located at the Animal Sciences Building (2029 Fyffe Rd, Columbus, OH 43210).

The practices in Sept/Oct/Nov are mandatory and you must be able to attend the mock contest to be eligible for the team.

Skillathon Volunteers Needed!

  • You don’t have to be an industry expert; answer keys will be provided.
  • Do not sign up for a livestock species or clothing/nutrition project in which your child is participating.
  • Light lunch/snacks will be provided.

As you can tell, we need many volunteers to help make light work of this enormous task.  Please only select one area to volunteer.

Multi-Purpose (beef and dairy cattle, hog, rabbit, poultry, equine, sheep), Blue Ribbon (all goats) and 4-H Hall (food and clothing).

    

Livestock Skillathon Practice is Underway!

Livestock Skillathon Practice is off to a great start! Join us Thursday, July 5, from 10am to 3pm in the 4-H Hall for another opportunity to practice.

LIVESTOCK SKILLATHON PRACTICE will be held on the following dates. Members can review information and become familiar with how the skillathon stations will be set-up. Individuals will be available to assist and answer questions. We ask that any member under the age of 16 be accompanied by a parent/guardian or club advisor. Below are the dates and times of the Skill-a-thon practice sessions.
