Woods, too, are good for pollinators. Learn how

A field full of native wildflowers is a fantastic place for pollinators. But a sun-speckled forest is too, say the organizers of an upcoming workshop on the topic.

“Woodlands provide pollinators with nectar, pollen, shelter and nesting sites,” say the organizers of CFAES’s May 18 Woodland Pollinators workshop, “making them valuable, if not well-known, pollinator habitat.”

At Ohio State’s Mansfield campus

Participants in the workshop will explore Ohio State’s forested Mansfield campus, will see woodland pollinators and plants up close, and will hear these talks by CFAES experts:

  • “Bees, Trees and Phenology!” by Denise Ellsworth, Department of Entomology,
  • “Lepidopterans: Butterflies, Moths and Skippers” by Ashley Kulhanek, OSU Extension, Medina County.
  • “Hummingbirds: Nature’s Marathoners” by Marne Titchenell, School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR).
  • “Forest Management for Pollinators” by Kathy Smith, SENR.

Register by May 11

The workshop’s host is CFAES’s Ohio Woodland Stewards Program. Smith is the program’s director.

Registration is $35 and includes lunch. The registration deadline is Friday, May 11.
