Today’s QUAL-Lab was a panel discussion of ethics in qualitative research. I was joined by Ann Allen (Educational Studies) and Weidong Li (Human Sciences). Bakari Lumumba (Educational Studies) hosted the event, which was part of a series of lunches that offer information about an important qualitative topic such as anti-racist research designs, ethics in ethnographic research, how to obtain grants with a qualitative design, and more. Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars 2020
The 2020 Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars 2020 adapted to COVID19 by becoming Virtual SLIYS 2020. SLIYS is a weeklong summer language program for high school and pre-college students organized by the Department of Linguistics. Participants explore how language works on many levels in order to develop greater linguistic awareness and the ability to think critically about language. This summer 4 sections of SLIYS were offered, two of SLIYS 1 and two of SLIYS 2. Along with colleagues from other subfields of linguistics, I was a guest speaker.
Buckeye Language Network DIY Citizen Science
The Language Pod is trying out a new kind of citizen science where the public can help us design, run, and analyze a whole language science experiment from start to finish. We’ve adapted some of our demos, along with new ideas, into fun games and things on the site, too. We’d love to have any and all of you participating if you’d be interested! OH TESOL 2019 Conference
The 2019 Ohio TESOL Conference takes place here in Columbus, Ohio on October 11th and 12th. The theme this year is Collaborate! Educate! Initiate! This is an annual meeting of various stakeholders (teachers, researchers, students, community support networks, etc.) who work with English learners and multilingual speakers in Ohio. I am is the featured speaker on Saturday morning. I will talk about the Expanding Repertoires of Practice project and reflect on the power of TESOL professionals and how we amplify our impact and expand our skills and knowledge through our collaboration with non-TESOL partners (students, families, non-TESOL colleagues, community organizations). I am also leading a workshop with COSI colleagues on hands-on and inquiry-based science with English learners.ORIC Faculty Research Fellows
This year I have the honor of serving as one of the 3 inaugural Office of Research, Innovation, and Collaboration (ORIC) Faculty Research Fellows. Xin Feng is the Fellow for the Department of Human Sciences, Scott Graves is the Fellow for the Department of Educational Studies, and I am the Fellow for T&L. Each of us serves as an ambassador and representative of ORIC to other faculty in our departments and across the College and the University. We provide research consultation to college faculty, students, and staff in our areas of expertise.
